Shanghai Electric Sets New Record in Methanol Bunkering Operation with 8000-Ton Delivery

Shanghai Electric Achieves Historic Bunkering Operation

On August 17, Shanghai Electric, in association with Shanghai International Port Group and CMA CGM Group, accomplished a remarkable bunkering operation that involved the supply of 8,000 tons of biometanol. This initiative has set a milestone as the largest operation of its kind in history, taking place at the Yangshan Port in Shanghai. The event was themed "Green Fueled Globe, Lead the Future," emphasizing a commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

The biometanol used in this operation was sourced from Shanghai Electric's Green Methanol Project located in Taonan. This project marks a significant leap not only in the volume of biometanol supplied but also in validating the stability of large-scale production and supply chains. The operation was backed by a fully integrated inter-provincial green fuel supply chain, a critical element for the project’s success.

Earlier this year, during the Shanghai International Shipping Green Fuel Sustainable Development Conference, a collaborative initiative to establish a transport corridor for green fuels was launched among the provinces of Shanghai, Jilin, and Liaoning. This corridor facilitates the journey of methanol produced in Jilin to be transited and stored in Dalian before final bunkering at the port in Shanghai.

The Green Methanol Project in Taonan capitalizes on the abundant local resources of wind and solar energy, along with biomass materials. Utilizing independently developed comprehensive processing systems and key equipment, this facility represents the world's first large-scale installation to produce biometanol by combining green electricity and biomass. The project meets the bunkering requirements of vessels serviced by the International Maritime Center in Shanghai and significantly supports the development of three key centers for international shipping green fuels.

Looking ahead, Shanghai Electric aims to intensify its focus on the entire industrial chain encompassing production, storage, transportation, and diverse applications of green fuels. The company is dedicated to enhancing research efforts on core technologies and continuously developing integrated solutions in green fuels. By supporting industry development through technological innovation, Shanghai Electric collaborates with partners to accelerate the integrated project for green methanol and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This project leverages green hydrogen combined with biomass gasification, intending to gradually enhance large-scale green fuel supply capabilities for the aviation and maritime sectors.

Additionally, Shanghai Electric is committed to advancing national goals in China regarding emissions reductions and fostering a global shift towards low-emission and clean energy solutions. This large-scale operation not only sets a precedent within the industry but also aligns with global efforts towards sustainable practices in energy use, particularly in maritime operations. The company’s ongoing initiatives are a testament to its leadership in the green energy sector and its proactive approach to innovate for a cleaner and more sustainable future.
