Spider AF Detects Over 3.2 Million Invalid Conversions in Early 2026

In a recent analysis conducted by Spider Labs, the esteemed marketing security firm based in Tokyo, Japan, it was revealed that their anti-ad fraud tool, Spider AF, detected over 3.2 million invalid conversions (IVCs) in the first half of 2026 (from January 1 to June 30). This figure underscores the alarming prevalence of fraudulent activity within digital advertising and highlights the critical need for a focus not just on the quantity of conversions but also their quality.

Key Findings

The report outlined two primary causes for these invalid conversions. Approximately 62.9% of the detections were attributed to geolocation spoofing (often termed geo-masking) and bots. To put this in perspective, out of the 3,262,655 detected IVCs, 1,033,949 were due to geolocation spoofing, while 1,017,798 were the result of bot activity. This means that a staggering two-thirds were rendered invalid by these two fraudulent tactics.

When analyzing the sources of these invalid conversions, search engine advertising emerged as the biggest culprit, accounting for about 2.17 million invalid conversions. Following that were display advertising, with around 305,544 IVCs, and retargeting ads, contributing 278,129 IVCs. Notably, the analysis also discovered 351,120 IVCs from sources that did not fit into the seven primary channels categorized.

Understanding Invalid Conversions

Invalid conversions represent actions such as inquiries, document requests, or purchases that appear genuine but arise from bots or illegitimate access attempts, making them non-viable leads. Their presence not only misleads marketers by distorting the understanding of actual customer behavior but also negatively impacts the optimization capabilities of advertising platforms that rely on accurate conversion data.

Recommendations for Advertisers

As digital marketing evolves, the risks posed by invalid conversions become more apparent. Advertisers are urged to adopt a checklist approach when assessing their conversion data, especially when planning for the second half of 2026:
  • - If there is a rise in CV count but a decrease in qualified leads or conversion rates.
  • - Look for anomalies in the timestamps or geographic locations of CVs that do not align with the target demographic.
  • - Notice an influx of submissions containing fictitious names or disposable email addresses.
  • - Identify if certain channels display a significantly lower quality in CVs.

The Future of Automated Advertising

Spider Labs’ findings also hinted at concerning trends for the future. With predictions that nearly 70% of advertising budgets will shift toward AI-driven automated optimization techniques by 2028, the reliance on conversion data will deepen, raising the stakes for managing invalid conversions. Should these fraudulent data infiltrate predictive models, advertisers may find their budget allocations misplaced, further emphasizing the importance of assessing both quantitative and qualitative aspects of conversions.
