Metal Supermarkets Increases Scholarship Funding for Trade School Students
In an effort to address the growing demand for skilled tradespeople, Metal Supermarkets is excited to announce the launch of its fifth annual Trade School Scholarship program. This year, the company has made a generous decision to double its scholarship funding to a total of
$20,000, allowing it to award
eight scholarships of
$2,500 each for aspiring trade professionals across the United States and Canada.
This expanded initiative comes at a crucial time when there is a significant workforce shortage in the trades sector, particularly in fields such as welding. As more industries struggle to find qualified candidates, the statistics are alarming. The United States alone will require an additional
320,500 welding professionals by 2029. This requirement highlights the urgent need to equip young people with the skills necessary to succeed in these vital roles. Similarly, Canada faces a demand for over
256,000 skilled tradespeople over the next decade.
Furthermore, a survey conducted by Metal Supermarkets revealed that 62% of young respondents are unaware of trade school opportunities offered during their high school education, underscoring the importance of raising awareness about these career paths. The Trade School Scholarship, established in 2022, aims to bridge this knowledge gap while also commemorating April as National Welding Month.
Ryan Pryznyk, President and CEO of Metal Supermarkets, emphasized the company's commitment to supporting the education of future trades professionals. “We are proud to invest in the next generation of skilled tradespeople,” he stated. “Doubling our scholarship total to $20,000 this year will significantly contribute to addressing the urgent need for skilled tradespeople across North America.”
Since its inception, the scholarship program has awarded a total of
$40,000 to
16 recipients, making a meaningful impact on their educational journeys and helping kickstart their careers in the trades. Notably,
50% of these scholarship winners have been female, demonstrating a commitment to increasing diversity in an industry that has traditionally underrepresented women.
One of the scholarship recipients, Kristina Glasow, who is currently attending WyoTech in Laramie, Wyoming, shared her experience: “The Trade School Scholarship has allowed me to pursue a meaningful education in welding and refine my skills. This scholarship has not only been beneficial financially but has also provided me with invaluable hands-on training that will prepare me for a successful career in welding.”
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be accepted into an accredited post-secondary trade school program with a semester beginning in 2026. They must also be enrolled in the upcoming semester and remain a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or Canada, holding a high school diploma or equivalent.
Scholarship applications are now open and will be accepted online until
June 30, 2026. Winners will be notified by email and phone by
July 31, 2026. Those interested in applying or learning more about the Metal Supermarkets Trade School Scholarship can visit their official website.
