Discover the Essence of Rice Farming With Hands-On Weeding Experience in Saku City

Experience the Heart of Rice Farming in Saku City

On June 28, 2025, from 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM, the Pal System Tokyo Cooperative will host a hands-on weeding experience in collaboration with JA Saku Asama in Saku City, Nagano Prefecture. This special event invites participants to engage directly with rice farming practices that prioritize sustainability and environmental protection.

Attendees will learn about the essence of rice production while actively participating in weeding, witnessing firsthand the benefits of reducing herbicide use. The event not only focuses on the farming techniques but also provides an opportunity to observe the various wildlife inhabiting the rice fields. Through these experiences, participants will gain insights into ecological farming that respects both nature and agricultural practices.

In the fields of Saku City, renowned for its high rate of sunshine and significant temperature fluctuations between day and night, attendees will understand how these conditions contribute to producing high-quality rice. With the focus on minimizing pesticide usage, JA Saku Asama cultivates rice varieties like Koshihikari and various vegetables. Pal System Tokyo members can enjoy exclusive access to specially cultivated rice known as Eco-Nagano Koshihikari through a reservation system.

Learning by Doing

Participants will receive guidance from knowledgeable instructors, including Shinji Ishida, who will educate them on identifying rice and its similar-looking weeds before they step into the fields. The hands-on nature of this experience encourages deeper understanding and appreciation for the labor involved in farming, thus fostering a connection between consumers and producers.

After completing the weeding process, attendees will search for different creatures living in the now-clear rice fields. This lively exploration promises to enhance participants' understanding of biodiversity and the types of wildlife that thrive in sustainable agricultural settings.

Pal System Tokyo is committed to connecting its members with producers across the country, facilitating year-round exchange programs that start from rice planting to harvesting. These programs include various activities, such as fruit picking, vegetable harvesting, and farm assistance, helping participants learn about local agriculture while strengthening the ties between consumers and producers.
