Revamping Power Systems Under the Hormuz Strait Crisis: Exploring Key Models and Solutions

Seminar Overview

On July 14, 2026, the Japan Planning Institute (JPI) is organizing an important seminar led by Yoshiharu Nishimura, a senior researcher at Kansai Electric Power Company and a visiting professor at Osaka University. This event will delve into the reconstruction and prospects of power systems amid the ongoing crisis in the Hormuz Strait.

Key Focus Areas

The seminar will cover the structural effects of the Hormuz Strait crisis on electricity prices and LNG procurement. Participants will gain invaluable insights into revenue opportunities and decision-making criteria regarding battery storage, electric vehicles (EVs), and decentralized power systems.

Other significant topics include:
  • - Scenarios for reconstructing electricity business under strengthened regulations.
  • - Investment perspectives in light of the current crisis.

This seminar aims to equip attendees with practical knowledge crucial for navigating these challenges effectively.

A Deep Dive into the Crisis

The Hormuz Strait crisis has severely impacted global energy markets, particularly oil. Despite Japan's shift towards non-oil-based energy sources, the risks associated with LNG from Qatar and the JKM price have begun to materialize, emphasizing the interconnected nature of supply and pricing.

During the seminar, Nishimura will analyze how regulatory developments aimed at enhancing retail restrictions and strict policies on battery business interact with this crisis. A comprehensive overview of business focal points for the next two to three years will also be provided.

Seminar Agenda

1. Real Effects of the Hormuz Strait Crisis
- Discuss the implications of the crisis for Japan’s energy landscape post-oil crisis.
- Identify deficiencies and what constitutes a crisis in broader terms of oil products.
- Assess the risks concerning electricity pricing and their medium- to long-term impacts.

2. Future of Power System Reconstruction
- Key strategies for securing fuel and restructuring power generation investments.
- Addressing cybersecurity challenges, notably the JCSTAR issue.
- Opportunities and challenges surrounding battery storage utilization.

3. Expanding Non-Fuel Systems
- The advantages decentralized systems offer amid soaring fuel and electricity prices.
- Analyzing whether the shift to EVs will accelerate.
- Identifying essential components for effective business models.

4. Q&A and Networking Opportunities
- Engage in direct dialogue and Q&A sessions with Nishimura, a leader in the field.
- Network with peers from diverse industries to exchange insights and explore new collaborations.

Registration and Participation

The seminar allows for multiple participation methods: on-site attendance (with no archive access), live streaming (also without archive access), and options for accessing recorded sessions later.

  • - Registration Fees:
- 1 participant: ¥37,870 (tax included)
