Consumers Energy Commits Over $90 Million to Enhance Michigan's Power Grid Reliability
In a significant move toward enhancing energy reliability, Consumers Energy has announced that it has invested over
$90 million in various projects aimed at securing the electric grid for its customers throughout Michigan. This investment is a reflection of the company’s dedication to providing stable and affordable energy while ensuring that the electric grid remains robust against challenges.
This year alone,
1,001 reliability projects have been completed, with around
886 additional projects slated for the remaining months of the year. Investments targeting substation repairs, maintenance of high-voltage lines, and the replacement of low-voltage electrical lines and poles span across
55 out of the 68 counties within the service territory of Consumers Energy.
As stated by Greg Salisbury, the Senior Vice President of Electric Distribution at Consumers Energy, “These planned reliability upgrades go a long way in ensuring our customers have reliable power when they need it most.” Every dollar from their customers is being prudently allocated, with
75 cents of each dollar being reinvested into necessary upgrades and repairs. This strategic approach demonstrates the company’s long-term vision for maintaining a resilient energy infrastructure.
Consumers Energy focuses its efforts on areas that have seen
recurring outages, ensuring that the communities receiving upgrades will experience improvements in service reliability. Salisbury emphasized, “At the end of the day, keeping the lights on is job #1 for us. This work supports a stronger grid and helps ensure families and businesses have the dependable energy they need now and in the future.”
The upgrades are substantial; for instance, the company has poured over
$13 million into enhancements in
Allegan County, more than
$12 million in
Kent County, and around
$7 million in
Saginaw County. These investments are designed to strengthen the reliability of energy delivery, and further plans include allocating over
$3 million for projects in
Grand Traverse County and over
$2 million for
Gladwin County. By year-end, it is expected that expenditures in
Calhoun County will reach over
$9 million.
As the largest energy provider in Michigan, Consumers Energy is an integral component of the daily lives of its residents, supplying natural gas and/or electricity to approximately
6.8 million of the
10 million people residing in the state. The firm’s ongoing commitment to ensuring reliable and affordable energy isn’t just a promise; it’s a key part of their operations and strategic planning.
“By investing in the electric grid infrastructure, we are not only addressing present demands but are also taking foresighted steps to meet future energy needs,” observed Salisbury. As efforts continue into the later months of 2026, Michigan customers can look forward to enhanced service reliability and ongoing improvements that keep pace with the growing demand for energy.
