University of Phoenix's Colloquium Elevates Doctoral Students' Academic Journey
The University of Phoenix College of Doctoral Studies successfully organized its fifth Doctoral Journey Colloquium from April 27 to 30, focusing on enriching the academic experiences and networking opportunities for doctoral students. This annual event stands as a testament to the University's commitment to fostering a supportive environment conducive to scholarly achievement.
Dr. Hinrich Eylers, Vice Provost of the College of Doctoral Studies, emphasized the event’s responsive design, noting that each colloquium is tailored based on feedback from previous gatherings. The recent event witnessed an impressive turnout, with over 280 participants including students, alumni, and faculty from diverse disciplines such as Business, Education, and Healthcare. The presence of an enthusiastic crowd made it the most well-attended virtual colloquium to date.
Opening Sessions and Networking
The event commenced with welcoming remarks from college leaders, setting an encouraging tone for the sessions that followed. The participants engaged in interactive workshops which consented to deeper reflections on their academic journeys. The workshops were designed not only to offer insights into doctoral progression but also to facilitate meaningful conversations among attendees, encouraging the formation of life-long connections.
One particularly valuable takeaway from the colloquium was highlighted by Daniel Pickett, a doctoral student in the Doctor of Management program. He remarked on the benefits of networking with classmates and faculty, stating, "This was my first Colloquium and it was an amazing opportunity to grow my network, including joining a new virtual study group. The session on preparing for the oral defense was very helpful; it transformed my earlier apprehensions into better clarity and understanding."
Another attendee, Josephine Grey, a U.S. Army veteran and doctoral student in the Doctor of Health Administration program, shared her experience of attending the colloquium for the fourth time. She found the new sessions extremely relevant to her current stage, particularly noting, "The session on the IRB was insightful, given that I’m currently working on revisions. Each time I participate, I gain informative insights that significantly enhance my academic experience. I highly encourage other students to attend, regardless of their progression in the program."
Strengthening Doctoral Community
The colloquium is seamlessly integrated into the broader Doctoral ecosystem of the University. It plays a crucial role in bolstering support for students and alumni, disseminating updates, and creating networking opportunities that bolster the college’s doctoral community. Additionally, the event aims to identify improvements in program offerings and the support systems available for both students and alumni.
As attendees shared experiences and collaborated on academic challenges, the event served not only as a platform for learning but also as a vibrant community-building initiative.
Future Plans
Looking ahead, the College of Doctoral Studies is already in the planning phase for the 2027 colloquium, aiming to enhance support structures for doctoral students even further. The goal remains clear: to continue evolving the format and content of these gatherings based on participant feedback, ensuring each event is more enriching and engaging than the last.
