A New Font and New Opportunities for Taito
Tokyo's Taito Ward is set to make a significant leap in its creative endeavors with the introduction of its first local font, tentatively named the "Taito Font." This initiative is spearheaded by Atelier Nitto, a workshop for continuing support of disabled individuals, run by the non-profit organization FUKU・WARAI. The project, which launches its crowdfunding campaign on CAMPFIRE starting May 10, 2026, aims to foster new connections between disabled artists and society while broadening their expressive capabilities.
Currently, disabled artists face challenges in achieving financial independence, with average monthly earnings in similar support facilities hovering between 10,000 to 20,000 yen. Despite their dedication to creating art, these financial limitations can hinder their ability to lead self-sufficient lives. Atelier Nitto has long worked towards improving these conditions by collaborating with businesses for art rentals, but they believe the true key lies in establishing a stable foundation that allows these artists to truly belong and flourish in society.
Three Key Initiatives of the Project
Funded through crowdfunding, the Taito Font project focuses on three main objectives that will elevate the artistic expressions of disabled creators into "valued designs":
1.
Creation of the Taito Font: Utilizing the local font scheme proposed by Shibuya Font, the project will begin by establishing a strong foundation at Atelier Nitto in its inaugural year. Following this, collaborations will occur with welfare institutions in Taito Ward. Designers will convert letters and drawings created by disabled individuals into a functional font that can be utilized for signage, souvenirs, and other community resources, returning data use fees to the artists.
2.
Launch of an Art E-commerce Site – "danran": Breakthroughs in distribution are essential for artists. Therefore, an online platform allowing individuals to purchase art will be created. This e-commerce site aims to bridge the gap between the artists' creations and the everyday lives of consumers, allowing anyone to enjoy and support these artists' works.
3.
Support for the Photography Club and Exhibition: Under the guidance of professional photographer Masaki Konno, Atelier Nitto will establish a photography club where artists can capture the world through their lenses. The culmination of this initiative will be a photography exhibition held in 2026, accompanied by a collection of their works in a photo zine.
A Vision from the Representative Director, Kei Takahashi
Kei Takahashi, the representative director, shared their personal journey, stating, "Growing up watching my father lose his sight due to mid-life disability, I too have lived in a world where my identity as an LGBT individual was hidden. This experience led me to the desire to create a space where everyone can avoid disliking themselves. The goal isn't to seek help due to disabilities but rather to utilize one's own colors (art) to bring joy to others and earn a living. I aspire to spread this vision of dignity from Taito Ward."
Support from Local Partners
Shiraha from Enoki, a coffee roasting entity based in Kuramae, expressed solidarity with this initiative, stating, "I want to create a place where disabled individuals can engage with society based on their strengths and exchange value equally." As part of the project’s contributions, they will offer products like "UKIYOE COFFEE" featuring labels designed by Atelier Nitto, showcasing community support for this venture.
A multitude of messages backing this initiative have also been received, reinforcing the collaborative spirit within the community.
