Promoting Traffic Safety through Education: The 7-Year-Old Project
In an age where the safety of children is paramount, the
7-Year-Old Traffic Safety Project has emerged as an essential initiative designed to protect young students from traffic accidents. Spearheaded by
Kokumin Kyosai Coop in collaboration with
Asahi Gakusei Shimbun, this project aims to educate elementary school students about the importance of traffic safety through engaging and interactive online classes.
Scheduled for June 25, 2025, this online curriculum targets students from grades one to four, focusing on building their awareness and understanding of safe practices while navigating their surroundings. With content designed as both educational and entertaining, it incorporates quizzes and thought-provoking activities to help students grasp the fundamental aspects of traffic safety. Classes will predominantly emphasize safe walking practices, meeting the unique needs of younger children who are still developing their situational awareness.
Course Overview
The online course offers a structured yet adaptable format. Despite the virtual nature, the objective remains clear: foster an environment where children actively engage with traffic safety principles. Topics covered include:
- - Safe Walking Practices: Understanding the importance of staying vigilant and aware while walking to and from school.
- - Situational Awareness: Teaching students to observe their surroundings and recognize potential hazards.
- - Interactive Quizzes: Engaging kids through fun quizzes related to traffic rules to reinforce their learning.
The class will be taught by
Akihiro Numata, an educator from
Tokyo Gakugei University's attached Oizumi Elementary School. Numata brings a wealth of experience, having graduated with a degree in education and furthered his studies with a master’s degree from
Ball State University in the U.S. Since 2006, he has dedicated his career to educating young minds and has conducted numerous engagements aimed at motivating students and teachers alike.
Expanding Awareness and Impact
The impact of the
7-Year-Old Traffic Safety Project is not only restricted to the online classes. Following the session, parents, schools, and community members will be able to find recordings and detailed coverage of the classes on the Kokumin Kyosai Coop website as well as in the
Asahi Shogakusei Shinbun newspaper.
This ongoing venture has been inspired by alarming data from the
Traffic Accident Comprehensive Analysis Center, indicating that 7-year-olds are more vulnerable to traffic accidents due to their lower height and developing attention spans. Since its inception in January 2019, the project has actively worked to mitigate these shocking statistics through various outreach and educational efforts.
Previous Initiatives
The project has previously executed several notable activities to raise awareness and encourage safe practices:
1.
Donation of Crossing Flags: In June 2020, a campaign launched where each estimate for a mutual vehicle insurance policy resulted in one donated flag to schools and child welfare facilities, resulting in over 1.55 million flags distributed nationwide.
2.
Research Collaboration with Kanazawa University: Active research is in place to study children’s perspectives and behaviors concerning traffic safety, enabling data-driven improvements and protective measures.
3.
Development of Traffic Safety Hazard Maps: Working with Kanazawa University's Professor Fujio, hazard maps now enable families to assess past incidents and identify safe routes before outings.
4.
Establishment of Children's Observation Day: April 4 has been designated as
Children’s Observation Activities Day, aimed at further encouraging community awareness and support for children's safety.
5.
Digital Picture Book Publication: To enhance parent-child engagement, a digital picture book titled
“Mysterious Magical Glasses” has been released to help kindle conversations about safety while making it enjoyable.
Conclusion
As part of the national conversations around safety and community welfare, the
Kokumin Kyosai Coop encourages collective action to create safer environments for the younger generation. The ongoing commitment to foster community engagement and educational initiatives exemplifies how cooperatives can play a pivotal role in shaping a secure future for our children.
