Texas Solar and Storage Plant Launches to Power BASF's Freeport Operations with Renewables

X-ELIO Launches Liberty Energy Project in Texas

X-ELIO has recently kickstarted operations at its cutting-edge Liberty Energy Project located in Dayton, Texas. This remarkable initiative integrates 72 megawatts (MW) of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity coupled with a substantial 60 MW of battery energy storage, marking a significant milestone as X-ELIO’s first combined solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) in the United States. With the Liberty Project now in action, BASF's Freeport facility can look forward to sourcing 100% of its anticipated energy needs from renewable resources.

The official inauguration of the Liberty Project took place on September 24, 2025, and was attended by key figures from both X-ELIO and BASF. Vital stakeholders from the local community, institutional representatives, and project partners were also present at this landmark event. Brad Morrison, BASF Freeport's Senior Vice President and General Manager, acknowledged the significance of this collaboration stating, "The inauguration of the Liberty Project marks an important milestone in our journey toward more sustainable operations and enabling the green transformation of our customers."

BASF stands to benefit directly from the Liberty Project by securing 48 MW of electricity under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) that spans 12 years. This agreement was first established in 2022, highlighting BASF's commitment to utilizing renewable energy at one of its six major Verbund manufacturing sites across the globe. These Verbund sites employ an integrated approach that seamlessly combines raw materials, manufacturing processes, and energy management to optimize efficiency.

Lluís Noguera, Chairman and CEO of X-ELIO, expressed his enthusiasm regarding the new venture, stating, "The Liberty Project represents a major stepping-stone in our planned expansion in the U.S., a key market for X-ELIO. Presently, we are developing an impressive pipeline consisting of 2.8 GW of solar PV and 2.1 GW of storage projects aimed at delivering competitive energy solutions and fostering economic growth in local communities."

Moreover, Kerri Neary, Country Manager for X-ELIO in the U.S., emphasized the project's dual benefit of providing sustainable energy while also creating tangible value for partners. She stated, "This Project exemplifies how X-ELIO creates high-quality projects that guarantee reliable energy, adding significant value to our stakeholders. We take pride in supporting BASF and contributing to the economic and social development of Texas, establishing a benchmark for similar efforts both within the state and beyond."

Community Commitment

Beneath its ambitious energy goals, X-ELIO is equally dedicated to making a positive impact on local communities throughout the lifecycle of its projects. Through its Community Nature Plan Program, the company has initiated several community-oriented initiatives within the region.

Among these efforts is the establishment of the Dwelling Garden in Liberty, a newly created green space intended for community use. In addition, the construction of a boardwalk at the Kleb Woods Nature Preserve aims to enhance accessibility for families and individuals with reduced mobility. Restoration work on the drainage system at the Liberty Food Bank has also been carried out to improve safety and serviceability, thus assisting local families in need. Moreover, a marketing campaign designed to recruit volunteers for Meals on Wheels underscores X-ELIO's commitment to supporting local initiatives.
