Revolutionizing Learning Assessment in the Age of AI: Insights from Papageno's Workshop

On January 8, 2026, a significant FD training workshop themed "Reconstructing Learning Assessment Methods in the AI Era" was conducted by Papageno, led by Yasumasa Tanaka, the CEO. This event was held at the International University of Health and Welfare Narita Campus and catered to around 30 nursing faculty members.

Background of the Workshop

The rapid integration of generative AI in education poses new challenges. Students are increasingly using AI tools for tasks like report writing. This shift has rendered traditional assessment methods, focused on rote memorization and reproduction of knowledge, inadequate for truly measuring students' learning outcomes. As a result, there are growing calls within the nursing education community to revise these evaluation methods significantly. The workshop aimed to address this issue, fostering discussions among educators about suitable assessment strategies in the AI context and preparing specific improvement proposals for upcoming syllabus revisions.

Workshop Program Overview

The program unfolded over a 90-minute session consisting of lectures and group work:

Part 1: Opening (10 minutes)
The workshop began with a presentation that highlighted the challenges nursing educators face in assessing students in the age of AI, based on pre-training surveys.

Part 2: Lecture - The Nature of Assessment in an AI World (30 minutes)
A lecture illuminated the pivotal shifts in educational assessment amid AI proliferation. Key topics included redefining essential skills for assessment (such as knowledge application, critical thinking, metacognition, and problem-solving in real-world scenarios), principles of evaluation design focusing on process orientation, individualization, authenticity, and multi-faceted assessment. Practical methods of task design, considering collaborative efforts with AI, were also introduced.

Part 3: Group Work - Redesigning Assessment Methods (40 minutes)
Participants divided into mixed-specialty groups to discuss various aspects of assessment methods within their subjects. The dialogue focused on developing evaluation strategies that are less susceptible to AI influence and also effectively gauge true academic and clinical competences.

Part 4: Collective Sharing and Q&A (10 minutes)
Each group shared their findings and offered feedback on various case studies presented during the workshop.
