CATL Unveils TENER+ Ultra-High Capacity Storage System at All Energy 2026
CATL Unveils TENER+ Ultra-High Capacity Storage System
Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) has taken a significant step forward in energy storage technology by introducing its innovative TENER+ system during the All Energy 2026 event in Melbourne, Australia. This system is specifically designed to meet the demanding energy storage needs of utility-scale projects, facilitating a smooth transition towards renewable energy.
Overview of TENER+
The TENER+ is an ultra-high capacity energy storage system that boasts a remarkable 9 MWh capacity. It is tailored for long-term reliability, making it an attractive option for energy developers seeking to maximize their project's profitability. By utilizing this system, developers can reduce the number of containers required by up to 40% and decrease the project's footprint by 12%, which is especially beneficial for areas where space is limited.
The system's intelligent thermal management enhances overall cycle efficiency while minimizing auxiliary energy consumption. One of the standout features of TENER+ is its ability to facilitate simultaneous startup of multiple units with a single click, significantly streamlining project deployment.
Engineered for a lifespan of 25 years, the TENER+ system incorporates liquid cooling and is designed to withstand humid and coastal environments. Furthermore, it maintains noise levels below 65 dBA at a meter away and utilizes a superior escape design to prevent overheating among adjacent systems, allowing for optimal performance even in extreme summer conditions.
Introducing TENER Sodium
In tandem with TENER+, CATL unveiled the TENER Sodium, a groundbreaking system utilizing sodium-ion battery technology. This product claims to deliver over 30 MWh of energy and can operate in temperatures reaching up to 55 °C while providing more than 10,000 operational cycles at 45 °C. TENER Sodium achieves an impressive cycle efficiency of 95%, backed by a lifespan exceeding 20 years.
The introduction of sodium-based technology provides project developers and asset owners the flexibility to choose between lithium-ion and sodium-ion systems. Since sodium is more abundant and widespread than lithium, it opens new avenues for sustainable battery supply chains.
Industry Partnerships and Future Goals
During the launch event, CATL signed three memorandums of understanding with notable organizations, including Hitachi Energy, EPEC Group, and UNSW Sydney, aimed at enhancing the deployment and integration of battery storage projects in Australia. These partnerships are envisioned to address the challenges faced by Australia’s energy grid, especially with the increasing share of renewable energy sources.
As of the third quarter of 2026, renewable sources accounted for a historic 44.3% of Australia's National Electricity Market (NEM) generation. The rise in renewable energy has raised demand for robust storage systems, especially as coal-fired power plants exit the market. With their TENER systems, CATL aims to provide the necessary grid-forming capabilities that support voltage and frequency stabilization.
CATL's collaboration encompasses both local expertise and innovation. By integrating Hitachi's energy conversion systems with CATL’s battery technologies, the goal is to enhance compatibility, reduce project risks, and standardize implementation processes across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.
Working with EPEC Group, CATL is set to leverage local integration expertise for project engineering, while partnerships with UNSW Sydney focus on establishing a Renewable Integrated Energy Training and Innovation Center in Sydney. The center aims to cultivate necessary skills for Australia’s clean energy transition.
Zane Zhou, CATL’s General Manager for Australia and New Zealand, commented on the commitment to not merely provide energy storage systems. Instead, CATL is focused on investing in people, building alliances, and enhancing capabilities in renewable energy, from developing the next generation of professionals to executing key projects for Australia’s energy grid.
According to SNE Research, CATL has dominated the global energy storage market for five consecutive years, boasting a 30.4% market share in 2025. With over 3,000 energy storage projects globally and more than 17 GWh installed capacity in Australia, CATL solidifies its leadership in the field while championing the transition towards cleaner energy solutions.
In summary, as the demand for sustainable energy sources continues to rise, CATL’s TENER+ and TENER Sodium systems represent vital contributions to Australia’s energy landscape, promising reliability, efficiency, and adaptable technology that can cater to future energy storage needs.
