New Insights into Headaches from Blood Component Research
Introduction
A recent study led by Daiichi Sankyo Healthcare in collaboration with Hirosaki University and the University of Tokyo's Medical Research Institute has unveiled significant insights into the blood components shared by individuals prone to frequent headaches. The findings were presented at the 67th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Neurological Society held on May 21, 2026.
According to a survey conducted by Daiichi Sankyo, approximately one in four Japanese individuals experience headaches at least once a week, making it a prevalent health issue for many. However, until now, concrete biomarkers that objectively evaluate headaches have remained largely undefined. The present study identifies shared blood factors that are lower in individuals who suffer from headaches, paving the way for new scientific insights into this common condition.
Background of the Study
Headaches are a widespread ailment experienced by many, but often, individuals endure pain without seeking medical attention, resulting in a reduced quality of life (QOL) and interfering with daily activities such as work and household chores. Various factors, including physiological conditions, lifestyle, and nutritional status, are believed to influence the likelihood of headaches. However, limited research has systematically explored the correlation between objective data from blood tests and headaches among the general population.
