POWERCHINA's Projects Mark China's Growing Role in Balkan Energy Transition

POWERCHINA’s Role in the Energy Transition of the Balkans

In recent years, China has emerged as a significant player in the Balkan region’s energy landscape, particularly through the initiatives taken by POWERCHINA. Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), endowed with substantial wind energy resources, is at the forefront of this transition. With an increasing emphasis on environmental protection, the country has become an attractive destination for Chinese investment in renewable energy.

The Ivovik wind farm, boasting a capacity of 84 megawatts (MW), and the Ulog hydroelectric power station, both under construction by the Power Construction Corporation of China, are emblematic of this shift. These projects not only represent a profound step towards the deployment of Chinese-manufactured electrical equipment in Eastern Europe but also aim for an impressive 90% local integration rate.

Ivovik Wind Farm: A Landmark Project

The Ivovik project is particularly noteworthy as it stands as the first foreign-concession energy project in BiH, making it a pioneering renewable development led by a Chinese entity. Once connected to BiH's national grid, the wind farm is slated to become the largest renewable generation facility in the country, with an anticipated annual output of approximately 259 million kilowatt-hours (kWh). Such production capacity is projected to prevent around 240,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions per year. Supporters herald the project as a catalyst for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s energy transition, promising both environmental benefits and economic advantages.

Ulog Hydroelectric Power Station: A Commitment to Sustainability

In Kalinovik, within the Republic Srpska, the Ulog hydropower station signifies a milestone as the inaugural hydroelectric project executed by a Chinese company in the country, as well as the first Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) project by POWERCHINA in Europe. Designed to reinforce the regional electricity supply, this facility will eventually deliver zero-emission energy, contributing to long-term sustainability objectives across Central and Eastern Europe.

A Bridge Between Nations

For POWERCHINA, these projects highlight its expanding role in the clean energy sector in Europe. Company executives describe the Ivovik and Ulog ventures as crucial links between China and Bosnia and Herzegovina, aimed at enhancing renewable infrastructure while fostering broader cooperation in climate and energy transition efforts. As European countries strive to meet ambitious environmental targets, the collaboration with Chinese enterprises like POWERCHINA may serve as a model for future projects aimed at achieving sustainable development through international partnerships.

POWERCHINA's efforts in Bosnia and Herzegovina could pave the way for similar initiatives across the Balkans, showcasing how international cooperation can accelerate progress toward a more sustainable and greener future for the region.
