The Royal Mint Commemorates Pink Floyd with First Official Coin in the UK

The Royal Mint's Tribute to Pink Floyd

The Royal Mint has unveiled a remarkable tribute to the legendary band Pink Floyd, introducing the first official commemorative coin in the UK dedicated to the group. This comes more than 50 years after Pink Floyd first emerged from London’s underground music scene, forever changing the landscape of modern music. The unveiling of this coin is an acknowledgment of the band's exceptional and enduring legacy, which has transcended generations.

The reverse side of the coin features the iconic prism design taken from Pink Floyd's seminal album The Dark Side of the Moon, while the obverse side showcases the portrait of His Majesty the King. This officially sanctioned coin is set to be available starting May 14, 2026, and stands as a testament to the band's cultural significance and immense contribution to the music world.

Designed by Henry Gray, the coin's reverse emphasizes the iconic prism that has become synonymous with not just the band, but also with creative expression and innovative sound. It is truly one of the most recognizable images in music history, representing Pink Floyd's visionary approach not only to sound but also to art and experimentation. Moreover, a limited selection of these coins will feature a rainbow prism effect, bringing the celebrated design vividly to life.

The artwork for the album cover, depicting a prism spectrum, was conceptualized by Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis and illustrated by George Hardie. The Dark Side of the Moon has achieved phenomenal success, selling over 50 million copies worldwide, cementing Pink Floyd’s reputation as masters of the progressive rock genre.

Pink Floyd joins an illustrious lineup of British music legends commemorated by the Royal Mint within their “Music Legends” series, which includes other iconic figures such as David Bowie, George Michael, Shirley Bassey, Paul McCartney, and Freddie Mercury. Nearly half a million coins from this series have already been distributed worldwide to collectors and music fans in over 108 countries.

Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coins at the Royal Mint, remarked on Pink Floyd’s rarity and cultural impact: “Pink Floyd belongs to that truly rare category of bands whose music and imagery transcends generations. Once you see this coin, you instantly recognize who it is dedicated to. The iconic prism is immediately identifiable to fans across the globe, beautifully brought to life by Henry Gray’s precision and artistry. Their influence on music, art, and culture is immeasurable, and we are incredibly proud that the Royal Mint can contribute to preserving this legacy for generations to come.”

In addition to the coin, fans of Pink Floyd will have the opportunity to purchase an exclusive limited-edition plectrum, crafted from gold, silver, and dark chrome. Designed by Royal Mint designer Daniel Thorne, this piece similarly reflects the iconic motif of The Dark Side of the Moon. The significance of the plectrum in the band's history is underscored by David Gilmour's legendary guitar solo in Time, a key moment not only on the album but also in the annals of rock music, making this plectrum a fitting homage to Pink Floyd's lasting musical contributions.

Pink Floyd, formed in London in 1965 by Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright, with David Gilmour joining in 1968, redefined the Progressive Rock genre and produced some of the most celebrated albums in music history. Albums like The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), and The Wall (1979) have solidified their place among the most innovative and influential bands ever.

More than five decades later, their music continues to captivate new generations of fans around the globe.

The Pink Floyd commemorative coin will be available from 9 AM on May 14, 2026, with prices starting at £18.50. For further details and to make a purchase, visit www.royalmint.com/pinkfloyd.
