New Grant Opportunity from Uber and LISC Aims to Improve Transport Access for Low-Income Patients
Expanding Access to Healthcare through Innovative Transportation Solutions
In a groundbreaking effort to ensure healthcare accessibility for economically vulnerable populations, Uber has partnered with the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) to extend their Health Access Fund. An announcement made on June 4, 2026, revealed up to $750,000 in new grants, aimed at enhancing transportation solutions for patients who struggle to reach vital health services.
With grants averaging $50,000 available for nonprofit healthcare providers across nine states, this initiative is a significant stride towards tackling transportation barriers that impede access to essential care, particularly for low-income patients. The rides provided through Uber Health enable patients to attend various health services, including geriatric care, maternal health, cancer treatments, and management of chronic diseases like diabetes. Notably, rides can be accessed without the need for a smartphone or the Uber app, thereby broadening the reach of this initiative.
Since its inception in 2021, the Health Access Fund has seen a considerable investment from Uber, totaling over $9 million, which has already benefitted tens of thousands of patients. The recent grant announcement is set to support many more, building on the ongoing efforts to bridge transportation gaps that hinder access to healthcare.
Michael Pugh, president and CEO of LISC, expressed the importance of this initiative. He stated, “There is plenty of evidence to demonstrate how closely transportation is linked to health, especially for people with modest incomes. Some health challenges may be insurmountable, but this one is not.” This program aims not only to provide rides but to foster a more inclusive healthcare environment that actively addresses the challenges faced by low-income patients.
Cher Braden, head of social impact at Uber, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the everyday challenges that many face in accessing healthcare services. She noted, “Getting to a healthcare appointment is something that many of us might take for granted,” yet for individuals without personal transport, these appointments can become daunting obstacles. The program is designed to dismantle such barriers, empowering more people to seek necessary medical care.
The need for this initiative is evident from various patient stories across participating health organizations. In California, for instance, a woman suffering from rheumatoid arthritis expressed gratitude for her newfound ability to attend medical appointments, which was made possible through the rides arranged by the Venice Family Clinic. Kam Lad, the program manager at the clinic, emphasized how vital this service has been in preserving not only the woman’s health but also her independence.
Similarly, Mercy Care in Atlanta shared an impactful story about a client who missed multiple appointments due to transportation issues. After being connected with Uber rides, the client was able to attend appointments consistently, restoring their sense of control and trust in the healthcare system.
The effectiveness of this transportation program is further supported by research highlighting that three-quarters of patients reported struggles with transportation access to health and social services. Many individuals indicated that transportation challenges led to missed medical appointments and unmet health needs.
The latest round of funding is open for applications from hospitals, health centers, and community organizations in states including California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Oregon, Texas, and the Washington, D.C. area. Applications must be submitted by June 22, 2026.
Since its foundation in 1979, LISC has worked diligently to address community gaps, focusing on affordable housing and health disparities. With their extensive experience and community-centered approach, this partnership with Uber is a continuation of their mission to foster vibrant, resilient communities across the United States.
Together, Uber and LISC are not just improving transportation access; they are paving the way for a future where healthcare is within reach for everyone, regardless of their financial situation. The synergy between innovative transport solutions and community health initiatives could transform lives, ensuring that no one is left behind when it comes to receiving vital health services.
