Immersive Theater Experience in Kagurazaka: The Quality Shop of Memories

Immersive Theater in Kagurazaka: 'The Quality Shop of Memories'

In an exciting new venture, Long Run Planning Co., in collaboration with the immersive theater creative team Mukai Chokoku, will bring an innovative theater experience to the streets of Kagurazaka, Tokyo, starting with a preview performance from February 5 to February 8, 2026. The main performance is scheduled for late April to early May 2026. Set in the historical context of Iidabashi's vast rental space, this immersive theater piece, titled 'The Quality Shop of Memories (Honoakari-do)', will utilize advanced audio AR technology through the Locatone™ application, allowing participants to listen to narrations while walking through the streets of Kagurazaka.

Exploring the Experience

Participants in this unique immersive experience will effectively become characters within the story, guided by GPS-linked audio from the Locatone application. As they traverse various locations in Kagurazaka, they will encounter actors portraying significant historical figures and characters related to the area's rich cultural tapestry. These interactions will unfold in real-time, creating an engaging environment where audiences not only watch the story but become a part of it, actively influencing their narrative journey based on their choices.

What is Immersive Theater?

This form of theater contrasts sharply with traditional models where audiences sit in fixed seats to observe performances on stage. Instead, immersive theater offers a participatory experience where audiences physically engage with the environment and storyline, blurring the lines between performers and spectators. This format has garnered attention both nationally and internationally as a fresh and exciting way to experience live storytelling.

Impact on Local Culture and Tourism

The creators aim to reconnect participants with Kagurazaka’s history and aesthetics through a carefully crafted narrative. Unlike ordinary guided tours, the production will evoke emotional connections to the location, encouraging participants to foster new affinities for the area. The potential for expanding this concept to other regions could enrich local tourism and promote the growth of new theater enthusiasts.

The immersive walking aspect of this theater format is expected to attract individuals who may have limited previous experience with conventional theater but enjoy participatory events.

The Story: Cultural and Personal Memories Intertwined

Dive into the whimsical setting of 'Honoakari-do,' a quality shop specializing in memories. This mystical shop appears only to those who genuinely need it and offers participants the chance to 'redo memories' by exchanging tokens inscribed with pivotal moments from their past. As they journey through the narrative, participants will have encounters with recognizable characters who embody the memories of Kagurazaka—legendary figures like playwright Kyouka Izumi and composer Masao Koga. Each interaction will challenge participants to confront their past, making for a thought-provoking experience.

Introduction to Locatone™

The Locatone application, developed by SoVeC, merges the real world with the virtual through sound, creating a new auditory experience. Participants will initiate the content on their smartphones, which will automatically deliver tailored audio narratives linked to specific locations. This seamless blend of technology and storytelling enriches the immersive experience.
