Empowering Girls Through Education: Plan International's Case Against Child Marriage

Empowering Girls Through Education: A Call to Action

On October 1, 2025, as the world celebrates the International Day of the Girl, Plan International has released its impactful "2025 State of the World's Girls" report, emphasizing the crucial role of education in promoting a brighter, more equitable future for every girl. Education serves as a vital pathway not only to personal advancement but also to wider societal change. It opens doors to opportunities for leadership, safety, and empowerment, allowing girls to learn, lead, decide, and thrive. Nonetheless, the reality for millions of girls remains stark; their access to education is stifled by various systemic barriers, with child marriage being one of the most significant obstacles.

The Reality of Child Marriage

The newly published report sheds light on how child marriage significantly disrupts educational pursuits for young girls. Documenting testimonies from 251 girls married before the age of 18 across 15 countries, the report reveals alarming statistics. Notably, 63% of these girls are no longer engaged in school, vocational training, or any form of employment post-marriage. Moreover, over one-third of them dropped out of school directly due to marriage, with a vast majority expressing regret over the education opportunities they lost. These narratives underscore the deep and often devastating impact that child marriage has on girls, robbing them of essential learning experiences that are crucial for shaping their futures.

It is crucial to recognize that while child marriage is typically viewed as a challenge faced by developing countries, it also poses a significant concern within the United States. Alarmingly, children can still be legally married in 34 states, and between 2000 and 2018, nearly 300,000 minors were granted the same legal status through marriage. This stark reality highlights the urgent need for awareness and proactive measures to combat child marriage, not only globally but domestically as well.

Global Conversation and Support

The findings from Plan International's report have already sparked extensive dialogue on the global stage, enhanced by features from major news outlets such as CNN. Shanna Marzilli, president and CEO of Plan International USA, poignantly remarked, "Every girl is worthy of an education, yet across the world, too many girls are kept from school by poverty, safety concerns, accessibility, and cultural norms like early marriage."

In response to these challenges, she encourages community support to dismantle barriers that obstruct girls' educational journeys. This International Day of the Girl calls for everyone to contribute to breaking these barriers so every girl can confidently attend school and construct the future of her choice.

The Role of Backpacks in Education

A tangible way to support education is through Plan International's backpack campaign. A simple backpack equips girls with the necessary supplies to stay in school, thus fostering their commitment to learning. The campaign has already made a substantial difference, distributing backpacks filled with essential educational materials across five countries, allowing children to show up prepared and eager to learn. To amplify the impact, Plan has pledged that every backpack purchased during October will be matched, effectively providing the equivalent of 500 backpacks to students around the world. A $25 contribution at the specified website ensures that more girls can access materials that ultimately lead to uninterrupted education and increased opportunities.

Joining the Fight Against Child Marriage

As we reflect on the insights from Plan International, it is abundantly clear that the fight against child marriage must be prioritized to pave the way for educational access for all girls. Engaging in advocacy for educational equality is not merely a moral obligation; it catalyzes progress for entire communities.

Every girl deserves a chance to enjoy her childhood, pursue her educational ambitions, and cultivate her potential free from the confines of early marriage.
