Empowering Latinas: Insights from the 44th Annual National Latina Women's Conference

Empowering Latinas in STEAM

The Mexican American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF) recently organized the 44th Annual National Latina Women's Conference and Expo at the San Gabriel Hilton. This significant gathering took place on March 7 and drew the participation of over 400 Latina leaders, professionals, and aspiring young women keen on exploring careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).

The event was centered around the theme “Tenacidad e Ingenio” (Tenacity and Ingenuity), which underlined the importance of perseverance and creativity in shaping the future of Latinas in STEAM fields. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as attendees participated in various workshops, engaging panel discussions, and meaningful networking sessions designed to empower the next generation of innovators.

Jerry Velasco, MAOF Board Chair, emphasized the foundation's commitment to facilitating the success of Latinas in diverse and vibrant STEAM careers. In his speech, he stated, "MAOF is dedicated to helping Latinas succeed in exciting STEAM careers. This conference is a great place for learning, inspiration, and growing a career, no matter what stage you're at."

Dr. Lilia Sarmiento, Co-chair of the National Latina Women’s Conference, further elaborated on the conference's goals: "Empowering Latinas in STEAM with 'Tenacidad e Ingenio' is designed to connect young women with experts in the sciences and arts through workshops, panels, and networking opportunities to unlock their potential to become future innovators."

Throughout the conference, high school girls were actively engaged with industry professionals, gaining firsthand experience and insights into various career pathways within the STEAM disciplines. The importance of such initiatives cannot be understated, as they provide invaluable encouragement and guidance for young women who often face unique challenges in pursuing careers in these fields.

In addition to the workshops and panels, the conference also took the time to honor trailblazing Latinas who have made significant contributions to their respective fields. Among the honorees were Yesenia Monsour, Senior Director, Regional Government & Community Relations at Kaiser Permanente, Gina Orozco-Mejia, Vice President of Gas Engineering & System Integrity at Southern California Gas Company, and actress Belissa Escobedo, known for her roles in 'Blue Beetle' and 'Happy’s Place.' The awards luncheon was hosted by Jessica Marie Garcia, recognized for her performance in 'On My Block,' adding a celebratory flair to the honors awarded.

The National Latina Women’s Conference and Expo is noted for being one of the longest-running events focused on empowering young Latinas in professional and leadership roles. MAOF continues to lead initiatives that promote education, career growth, and economic mobility for Latinas across California and beyond. This year’s conference not only inspired the participants but also sparked creativity and ambition, showcasing the potential of Latinas in the STEAM fields.
