New Global Aesthetics Report Highlights Major Trends in Facial Surgery and Procedures
New Global Aesthetics Report: A Shift in Preference Towards Facial Surgery
The latest findings of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) reveal significant trends in aesthetic procedures worldwide. According to the newly published Global Aesthetics Report for 2024, facial surgeries have surged in popularity, with eyelid procedures now leading the pack as the most frequently performed surgery. This shift highlights broader societal changes and the increasing acceptance of cosmetic enhancements.
In 2024, a remarkable total of approximately 38 million aesthetic procedures were carried out across various demographics. Interestingly, the number of surgical interventions reached around 17.4 million, while non-surgical procedures accounted for about 20.5 million interventions. Over four years, this equates to an impressive 42.5% growth in overall aesthetic procedures, indicating a burgeoning industry that continues to thrive.
Eyelid Surgery Takes the Lead
For the first time in recorded history, eyelid surgery emerged as the most common surgical procedure, supplanting liposuction. With roughly 2.1 million eyelid surgeries performed, it reflects a growing desire among individuals to enhance facial aesthetics. Following eyelid surgery, the next most common surgeries included liposuction, breast augmentation, scar revision, and rhinoplasty, contributing significantly to the diverse range of options available for cosmetic enhancement.
The report specifies that non-surgical procedures like botulinum toxin injections and hyaluronic acid fillers remain popular choices, with over 7.8 million such procedures completed globally. Other popular non-surgical options included hair removal, non-surgical skin tightening techniques, and chemical peels, reflecting an increasing preference for less invasive nature of cosmetic interventions.
Gender and Age Dynamics
The data also provides insights about the demographics opting for these procedures. Most surgeries were observed among the age group of 18–34 years, notably in breast augmentations and rhinoplasties. Meanwhile, botulinum toxin procedures were predominantly favored by individuals aged 35 to 50. This segmentation of procedures by age underscores a shifting cultural norm surrounding beauty and appearance, with younger individuals seeking enhancements at earlier ages.
Moreover, the report indicates that while liposuction still reigns as the most common surgical procedure for women, it has been closely challenged by eyelid surgery. Men’s preferences also reflect similar trends, with eyelid surgery ranked at the top, followed by gynecomastia procedures and scar revision.
Growth in Facial Procedures
Face and head procedure counts saw unprecedented growth, surpassing 7.4 million with a 4.3% increase year-over-year. Eyelid surgery's rise by 13.4% signals a notable shift in consumer priorities toward enhancing facial features. In contrast, some traditional procedures such as rhinoplasty and fat grafting observed fluctuating interest, with a slight decrease in rhinoplasty's popularity.
Dr. Amin Kalaaji, Chair of the ISAPS Global Survey Committee, noted that the report expands its scope to include newly recognized procedures, including 'Mommy Makeover' combinations and others. This shows an ongoing evolution within the field as it adapts to consumer interests and societal changes related to aesthetics.
Global Perspective
The United States remains at the forefront of aesthetic procedures, accounting for over 6.1 million interventions, with Brazil closely following at 3.1 million. Japan continues to be a key player in facial aesthetics. This international perspective highlights how diverse cultures embrace beauty standards and the adaptive nature of the cosmetic surgery industry.
Overall, the ISAPS Global Aesthetics Report illustrates a significant shift towards facial surgeries, particularly eyelid procedures, indicating that beauty standards are continuing to evolve. The increase in both surgical and non-surgical interventions symbolizes a growing acceptance and desire for personal enhancement, which is expected to shape future trends in the industry significantly.
