Embracing Craftsmanship: BAG MAKERS TOKYO '26 EXHIBITION
The East Japan Bag Industrial Association is thrilled to announce the upcoming
BAG MAKERS TOKYO '26 EXHIBITION, set to commence on
January 30, 2026 at the renowned Ginza Tsutaya Bookstore. This exhibition is a vital platform showcasing the sync of traditional craftsmanship and innovative design, spearheaded by the collaboration with the acclaimed design studio, nendo.
Reviving a Rich Heritage
Tokyo's bag-making industry boasts a rich tapestry dating back to the Edo period. However, this historic craft has experienced a drastic decline, with the number of businesses having dwindled to a mere quarter of its peak, plummeting from approximately 450 to about 120 companies.
BAG MAKERS TOKYO (BMT) was established in 2021 to tackle these pressing challenges by fostering a brand identity that includes product certification and a traceability system. As consumers begin to prioritize transparency, the BMT initiative aims to fortify the market for Tokyo's bag manufacturers.
A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity
Through a synergistic partnership with nendo—founded by design luminaries
Oki Sato and
Akihiro Ito—the exhibition will unveil original products that transcend traditional bag concepts. The showcase epitomizes a merger of Tokyo's revered craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics.
