Shanghai Electric Unveils Three Solutions for Energy Transition at Enlit Asia 2026

Innovations for Energy Transition by Shanghai Electric at Enlit Asia 2026

From September 22 to 24, 2026, Jakarta, Indonesia, hosted the Enlit Asia 2026, an influential platform focused on the energy sector across ASEAN nations, attracting over 11,000 visitors and 280 exhibitors. Shanghai Electric (SEHK: 02727, SSE: 601727) took this opportunity to present three innovative solutions intended to accelerate the energy transition under the theme "Powering the Archipelago."

Overview of Solutions

The three solutions developed by Shanghai Electric are specifically tailored to meet the unique regional requirements of the ASEAN energy markets. They target critical challenges such as reducing CO2 emissions from existing thermal power systems, enhancing the integration of renewable energy sources, and ensuring stable operations of island grids. These solutions also address the demand for low-carbon fuels in the maritime and aviation industries.

1. High-Efficiency Power Decarbonization

This initiative aims to help markets like Indonesia reduce the carbon intensity of their electricity grids. It involves upgrading existing facilities, switching to alternative fuels, and optimizing systems for improved efficiency. The implementation includes modular steam turbines for combined cycle plants that meet both electricity and heating needs, enhancing overall efficiency and lowering costs. Advanced gas turbines capable of operating with up to 30% hydrogen content are part of this solution, along with retrofit options for coal-fired plants to improve thermal efficiency and reduce coal consumption for a more sustainable operation.

2. Grid Modernization and Resilience Upgrade

This solution addresses the unique challenges faced by island grids, particularly regarding renewable energy integration, frequency regulation, and voltage stability. It combines synchronous condensers, flywheels, multi-technology energy storage, and integrated solar-storage power pods. This combined approach ensures rapid frequency response and inertia support while catering to short to long-term energy applications, providing immediate clean backup power for remote areas and critical operations.

3. Comprehensive Power-to-X Integration

Building on the previous success of the Jilin-Taonan project, these integration solutions encompass wind and solar power generation, green hydrogen production, biomass gasification, and synthesizing green methanol. The project achieved a remarkable milestone by fueling 8,000 tons of green methanol in a single instance, setting a world record. Phase II of this initiative commenced on August 20, 2026, aiming to produce 200,000 tons of green methanol and 10,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel annually. Shanghai Electric is now expanding these innovative solutions to maritime and aviation markets across the ASEAN region to support the transition to low-carbon fuels.

Regional Impact and Local Presence

Shanghai Electric's technologies and system solutions leverage a proven track record in Southeast Asian markets, including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Notable projects include the Pelabuhan Ratu coal power project in Indonesia with a capacity of 3 × 350 MW, the renewable energy facility in Selangor, Malaysia, and the recently completed 500 MW gas combined-cycle power plant project in Sarawak, Malaysia. These projects highlight the company’s integrated capabilities in modernizing traditional power plants, efficient gas generation, renewable resources, and green fuel initiatives, positioning it well for applying these three solutions throughout the ASEAN region.

During the Enlit Asia 2026, Shanghai Electric also contributed to the official conference program, presenting a technical session titled "High-Performance Gas Turbine Technology for Clean, Efficient, and Smart Power Generation." This session outlined the company's technology roadmap and solutions customized for high-performance gas turbines and combined cycle systems. Furthermore, the company hosted several roadshows and discussion forums that included representatives from PLN, Indonesia's state electricity provider, local clients, and energy sector scholars, focusing on fuel source diversification and the future development of Indonesia’s power grid.

Looking ahead, Shanghai Electric will continue to utilize its expertise in energy equipment manufacturing and system solutions to assist ASEAN partners in transitioning towards more efficient, stable, and low-carbon energy systems throughout Southeast Asia.
