A significant study conducted by Leverages Corporation on its AI HR platform, NALYSYS, sheds light on the rapidly changing landscape of job applications among recent graduates. The survey involved 328 students from the graduating classes of 2027 to 2029 and examined their perceptions and concerns surrounding the use of AI in the recruitment process.

The Rise of AI Utilization



With the increasing integration of generative AI into everyday tasks, approximately 60% of students reported being part of the 'AI-utilizing group', effectively using AI tools regularly. About 44.5% of these students have utilized generative AI specifically for creating their job application documents. The findings indicate that AI has become an essential tool in the job-seeking process, with over 80% expressing intentions to use it in the future.

However, this widespread adoption has also led to significant concerns among students. Approximately 80.5% of respondents reported feeling anxious about the current state of job applications, primarily due to fears of losing their individuality and the dangers of vague qualification filters. The concern here is that as more students turn to AI for application assistance, the resulting documents risk becoming too similar, potentially hindering their chances of standing out in a competitive job market.

Anxiety About AI in Interviews



When the survey turned to face-to-face interviews, students cited concerns about subjective evaluations by interviewers as a primary source of anxiety. The top worries included being judged based on biased perspectives or the challenge of dealing with interviewers' varying attitudes. Instead, students hope for a system where assessments are objective and fair, emphasizing the need for a level playing field in the recruitment process.

Perception of AI Interviews



Interestingly, about a third of the surveyed students maintained a positive view of AI interviews. While 34.7% viewed these interviews favorably, over 51% indicated that AI interviews help alleviate anxiety by providing a more neutral atmosphere compared to traditional interviews. Nevertheless, concerns remain regarding how well their enthusiasm and personal qualities could be conveyed through an AI interface.

Preparation and Transparency of AI Evaluations



Despite the optimism surrounding AI interviews, over half of the students expressed concern about their preparedness for such evaluations. The main source of anxiety stemmed from the lack of clarity regarding evaluation metrics, with almost half of respondents unsure how they would be assessed in an AI-driven setting. This fear, coupled with the novelty of the approach, poses a significant psychological barrier to students as they navigate the uncharted territory of AI-enhanced recruitment processes.

Seeking Balance Between Tech and Human Interaction



Keishuu Ohtaki, director of the HR tech department at Leverages Corporation, highlighted that the increasing role of AI in recruitment necessitates a reevaluation of current hiring processes. He emphasized that while students desire evaluations free from biases associated with human interviewers, they also seek meaningful interactions where their personalities can shine.

The study’s insights underline the crucial balance needed between the efficiency brought by technology and the imperative for human connection in recruitment. As AI tools become more prevalent, organizations must adapt their selection processes to ensure that they do not lose sight of the essential human elements in hiring. This multifaceted approach could lead to improved matches between candidates and organizations, fostering better overall job placements.
