A Remarkable Journey of Recovery from Parkinson's Disease and Complications

On World Parkinson's Day, Jiahui International Hospital unveiled a compelling case that underscores the complexities of treating advanced Parkinson’s disease. The story of Mrs. Zhang, a 75-year-old patient grappling with a 35-year battle against Parkinson's, sheds light on the intricate collaboration required for such cases.

In early 2026, Mrs. Zhang faced a devastating crisis when a sudden duodenal perforation resulted in a life-threatening liver abscess. Her medical journey became even more complicated due to severe malnutrition and other pre-existing health conditions. Initially presenting symptoms like a cough, confusion, and leg swelling quickly escalated into a severe infection, putting her life at risk. Medical imaging revealed alarming signs, including abnormal air in the liver and an unusual connection between her ulcer and the infected liver cyst, exacerbated by the difficulties in imaging caused by her Parkinson's tremors.

Recognizing the complexity of her situation, the medical team at Jiahui Health assembled a multidisciplinary group of experts from various fields including Neurology, General Surgery, Gastroenterology, ICU, Inpatient Care, Medical Imaging, Anesthesiology, Nutrition, and Rehabilitation. Each discipline played a crucial role: radiologists utilized advanced techniques to bypass her tremors for clearer imaging, neurologists worked carefully to manage her neurotransmitter balance during this critical stage, and surgeons and gastroenterologists focused on treating the infection and repairing the perforation. The anesthesiology team made certain to manage airway risks and medication interactions, ensuring Mrs. Zhang’s safety throughout the surgical process. Meanwhile, the ICU and rehabilitation teams provided comprehensive support for her recovery.

Employing a cautious, staged approach given her delicate health, the team initially worked on stabilizing her condition with antibiotics, nutrition supplements, and drainage procedures. High-risk surgery to repair the damage was next, with anesthesiologists carefully overseeing her perioperative safety.

Post-surgery, management shifted back to her Parkinson's care, where the ICU and neurology teams adjusted her anti-Parkinson medications with great precision. Dosages were measured so carefully that adjustments as minor as an eighth of a tablet were made to ensure balanced control over both her motor and non-motor symptoms, while also avoiding potentially life-threatening dyskinesia. The nutrition team implemented a five-step strategy aimed at restoring her oral intake and reversing malnutrition, while rehabilitation progressed from passive movements to more active training to regain her strength and mobility.

After a month filled with intensive care and support, the transformation in Mrs. Zhang was astonishing. She went from being bedridden and disoriented to standing on her own, self-feeding, and even expressing her thoughts by writing a 100-character poem. Her story not only redefines expectations for long-term Parkinson's patients but also illustrates the power of staged multidisciplinary care to foster recovery and independence.

Dr. CHEN Yan, Chief of Neurology at Jiahui, emphasized, “This case is a testament to our commitment to holistic, full-cycle care. Treating Parkinson's disease successfully requires seamless integration among various disciplines to address all aspects of patient needs.”

Mrs. Zhang's inspiring recovery on World Parkinson's Day exemplifies resilience, while the multi-disciplinary teamwork at Jiahui provides a beacon of hope, compassion, and transformative outcomes for patients facing similar challenges.
