Dr. Elizabeth G. Matzkin Takes on a Pivotal Leadership Role

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) recently announced that Dr. Elizabeth G. Matzkin, a highly regarded orthopaedic surgeon from Boston, will serve as the second vice president of the organization. Dr. Matzkin's election took place during the AAOS annual meeting in New Orleans, a platform that highlights the advancements and challenges within the field of orthopaedics. This appointment sets the stage for her prestigious trajectory, which includes a planned presidency of the academy in 2028 — a noteworthy milestone, as she will become only the second woman to hold the highest position in AAOS history.

In her own words, Dr. Matzkin expressed, "It is a privilege to work alongside my fellow AAOS Board members to support orthopaedic surgeons and advance our shared priorities in education, advocacy, and quality." Her commitment to the AAOS mission is profound, emphasizing her determination to equip members with the necessary tools to provide exceptional musculoskeletal care.

Dr. Matzkin’s journey in leadership began with her two-year term on the AAOS Board of Directors, serving in the role of member-at-large. Beyond her involvement with AAOS, Dr. Matzkin has made strides in various national leadership roles with esteemed bodies such as the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society. Furthermore, her expertise has earned her the position of deputy editor for Arthroscopy: The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery, where she previously served as associate editor and on the editorial boards of multiple leading orthopaedic journals.

In her clinical practice, Dr. Matzkin is the director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at Mass General Brigham and holds the title of associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at Harvard Medical School. She has developed a nationally recognized program specifically geared towards female athletes, underpinned by an extensive research portfolio focusing on women's sports medicine. Her clinical contributions have also included providing care for U.S. soccer teams and the U.S. women's national hockey team. Currently, she serves as head team physician for Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts, while also playing a crucial role in the healthcare for Boston Legacy FC, the new expansion team in the National Women's Soccer League.

Dr. Matzkin’s academic achievements are as notable as her clinical credentials.
