AbbVie’s I Know IBD Project Wins Bronze at PR Awards 2025 for Enhancing IBD Awareness

On November 30, 2023, AbbVie announced that its I Know IBD (I know Inflammatory Bowel Disease) project received the Bronze award at the PR Awards 2025, organized by the Japan Public Relations Association. This recognition highlights the project's dedicated efforts in enhancing social understanding of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), particularly two major conditions: ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, which can significantly impact patients’ daily lives with symptoms like diarrhea and abdominal pain.

The I Know IBD initiative, launched in May 2022, aims to address one of the "invisible walls" that IBD patients face, particularly the anxiety surrounding restroom access when going out. It seeks to improve public awareness and understanding of IBD within society as a whole. This initiative comes at a time where misconceptions and stigma often hinder individuals from living fully.

The PR Awards are judged based on four criteria: strategy and research, creativity, execution quality, and the impact of the initiative. AbbVie's I Know IBD project has been recognized for tackling the various unnoticed challenges faced by IBD patients, described as "invisible walls." Increasing awareness is crucial, as many patients may modify their activities due to anxiety regarding restroom availability.

Since its inception, the initiative has garnered support across various industries, including beauty salons, restaurants, pharmacies, and hotels. As of the end of November 2025, the project has involved 199 partner companies and 3,188 participating locations across all 47 prefectures in Japan, creating a robust support network for IBD patients nationwide.

Feedback from the community highlights the importance of access to restrooms when outside, with many patients expressing how reassuring it is to know they have welcoming places to turn to.

AbbVie considers this award both an honor and a motivation to further their outreach efforts. The initiative aims to boost recognition and understanding of IBD, contributing to an improved quality of life for patients facing various challenges daily. Through the I Know IBD project, AbbVie aspires to continue widening the circle of support and fostering a more inclusive society.
