In a crucial step towards enhancing the safety of students, Nicklaus Children's Hospital has partnered with the School District of Palm Beach County (SDPBC) to launch Project ADAM. This initiative focuses on training school staff to effectively respond to incidents of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). As of now, 77 schools have begun this life-saving training, with completion expected across all SDPBC-operated schools by the end of 2025.
During the recent launch event at William T. Dwyer High School, a diverse group of stakeholders, including school officials and healthcare leaders, gathered to emphasize the importance of readiness in cardiac emergencies. The training program provided by clinical experts from Nicklaus Children’s Heart Institute includes vital skills such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the effective use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs), crucial tools in responding to cardiac emergencies.
"Every second counts in a cardiac emergency," stated Michael J. Burke, Superintendent of SDPBC. He pointed out that the training equips school personnel with the skills needed to act quickly and decisively when every moment matters. Schools participating in the program receive a two-year certification, ensuring ongoing awareness and preparedness.
Notably, Nicklaus Children's Heart Institute stands as one of Florida's two affiliates of Project ADAM, a nonprofit initiative dedicated to raising awareness and prevention surrounding sudden cardiac arrest. The partnership isn't just limited to schools, as the organization also provides free EKG testing for children to identify those at risk of SCA. This program has been active since 2011, screening over 70,000 children to help detect heart issues that may not show up during standard physical examinations.
"Nicklaus Children's is proud to extend Project ADAM’s life-saving capabilities to Palm Beach County, continuing our commitment to ensuring the safety and health of children throughout South Florida," expressed Matthew A. Love, president and CEO of Nicklaus Children's Health System. The significance of this initiative is evidenced by the lives saved in the neighboring Miami-Dade and Broward counties since the inception of Project ADAM, highlighting its success in improving community health outcomes.
Moreover, Nicklaus Children's Hospital not only leads the charge in cardiac safety and awareness but also provides a myriad of pediatric services. As the region’s premier children’s hospital, it hosts the Nationally ranked Heart Institute, along with numerous outpatient centers. These facilities offer advanced care and encompass various specialties - from oncology to orthopedics.
By prioritizing the education and training of school staff, Palm Beach County is setting a benchmark for cardiac emergency preparedness, potentially saving many lives. This proactive approach emphasizes the importance of community-driven programs in safeguarding the well-being of children and highlights the role healthcare organizations play in fostering safer environments for students.
