Recent Trends in Aesthetic Surgery: Eyelid Procedures Gain Prominence Worldwide
In an ever-evolving world of beauty standards and aesthetic aspirations, the latest report from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) sheds light on significant shifts in surgical preferences. The Global Survey on Aesthetic/Cosmetic Procedures released during the ISAPS Olympiad World Congress in Singapore reveals that eyelid surgery has taken the lead as the most performed surgical procedure worldwide, surpassing once-popular interventions like liposuction. This pivotal change marks a substantial trend in aesthetic fulfillment and highlights the importance of eye-related beauty enhancements.
Eyeing a New Trend
For the year 2024, records indicate that over 2.1 million eyelid surgeries were conducted globally, reflecting a 13.4% increase from the previous year. Eyelid procedures have captivated a diverse demographic, not only among women, who still primarily engage in liposuction, but notably among men, where eyelid surgery is the front runner, followed by gynecomastia and scar correction treatments. This rise in popularity underscores a shift toward facial rejuvenation as a key element in contemporary beauty practices.
The surge in eyelid surgeries significantly contributes to the overall increase in aesthetic procedures, which reached close to 38 million in 2024. Non-surgical methods are also thriving, with botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid injections leading the pack, evidencing that fewer individuals are opting for major surgical changes despite an increase in minimally invasive options.
Understanding the Demographics
The demographics of these aesthetic interventions reveal intriguing insights. Individuals aged 18 to 34 account for 54% of breast augmentations and 60.1% of rhinoplasties, while botulinum toxin treatments are particularly favored by those 35 to 50 years old, representing 47% of the total. The data indicates a more balanced distribution for procedures like liposuction and non-surgical fat reduction across various age groups, unveiling the evolving perspective on age and beauty treatment.
Facial and head-area operations had a total of 7.4 million procedures, marking a 4.3% annual increase. Following eyelid surgery are rhinoplasties, undergoing 1 million procedures despite a 10% decrease from prior years. Meanwhile, fat transfer techniques, especially in facial applications, rose sharply by 19.2%, underscoring a growing acceptance of substitutive beauty enhancement capabilities.
A Statistical Landscape
The ISAPS report highlights that the US remains at the forefront of aesthetic procedures, with over 6.1 million surgeries performed in 2024. Brazil follows closely with 3.1 million, taking the lead in surgical procedures, particularly liposuction. In addition to eyelid surgery, the report now incorporates data about trending combination procedures like
