Licca-chan: The Iconic Japanese Doll Makes Its North American Debut
In an exciting development for doll enthusiasts, Takara Tomy announced that Licca-chan, a beloved Japanese fashion doll, will launch in North America starting late March 2026. With a rich history dating back to its debut in 1967 and nearly 69 million dolls sold worldwide, Licca-chan is set to captivate a new audience across the Pacific.
A Cultural Landmark
Licca-chan embodies Japan's doll-making artistry and has been a cultural icon for over five decades. Known for her fashionable outfits and accessories, she has become not only a plaything for children but also a cherished collectible among adults. The concept of 'Licca-katsu,' which refers to the various activities tied to Licca-chan—such as outfit coordination, custom clothing creation, photography, and social media sharing—has allowed her to maintain a vibrant community of fans and supporters.
Licca-chan stands out due to her personalized approach, where each doll comes with a backstory, including age, family, and friendships, inviting imaginative play. In recent years, the phenomenon around Licca has extended to social media platforms, with posts related to her enjoying an incredible engagement, especially on Instagram.
North American Launch Plans
To mark her debut, Takara Tomy has launched an English version of the official website (licca-doll.com) and established a social media presence on Instagram (instagram.com/licca_chan_official). This will serve as a platform for sharing product information, promotional videos, styling inspirations, and much more to entice North American fans.
Takara Tomy's President and CEO, Akio Toyama, expressed his excitement about this new venture, saying, "Licca-chan has transformed from a children’s doll into a cultural phenomenon embraced by adults as well. The response we received at the recent Toy Fair in New York was extraordinarily positive, and we are thrilled to bring Licca-chan to fans in North America."
Product Line-Up
The initial product release will feature ten unique dolls, including collaborations with popular Japanese characters like My Melody and Kuromi, as well as traditional clothing styles like kimono and school uniforms. These items will be available in major retail outlets across the U.S., including BoxLunch, HOT TOPIC, MINISO, animate Los Angeles, animate USA, and Gacha&Catch as of late March 2026.
