Star Refrigeration Achieves Triple Nomination at Made in Scotland Awards 2025
Star Refrigeration, a leader in industrial refrigeration engineering, has been nominated for three significant honors at the Made in Scotland Awards 2025. Recognition from this respected event highlights the company's commitment to sustainable practices in energy, innovation in technology, and leadership in manufacturing.
Organized by the Scottish Business Insider, the awards ceremony is set to take place on September 25th, 2025, at the Voco Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow. The event aims to celebrate Scotland's most innovative companies, key entrepreneurs, and manufacturing leaders.
Categories of Recognition
Star Refrigeration has been shortlisted in three categories, showing its extensive impact across the UK industry:
1. Energy and Renewables Manufacturer of the Year: This nomination is awarded to Star Renewable Energy (SRE), a branch of Star Refrigeration that specializes in industrial heat pumps. SRE has been recognized for its innovative technology that optimizes heating and cooling solutions in buildings, industries, and urban areas while incorporating environmentally friendly natural refrigerant alternatives.
- A notable project includes the Drammen installation in Norway, acclaimed as the world’s first and largest zero-carbon water source heat pump.
- In Scotland, the Queens Quay heat pump in Clydebank harnesses river water to provide sustainable heating for the community, serving as a model for similar projects in cities such as Bristol, Jarrow, and Liverpool.
- Recent advancements also include steam-generating heat pumps capable of operating at 140°C for emissions reduction in whisky distilling and barge-mounted heat pumps for integrating clean energy into urban district heating systems.
2. Digital Technology Award: Star's Ethos energy management system has been recognized for its role in uncovering inefficiencies in industrial refrigeration and heating systems. This technology combines AI, digital twin technology, and advanced algorithms to optimize system performance, significantly reducing carbon emissions for notable clients.
- For instance, Tesco managed to cut its energy consumption by 4 GWh and avoided emitting 835 tonnes of CO₂ in just two years, while Asda achieved savings of 5 GWh and 1,100 tonnes of CO₂ across various sites over four years. In 2024, Ethos effectively monitored 140,000 MWh of energy, resulting in verified savings of 14,000 MWh and 2,600 tonnes of CO₂.
3. Outstanding Contribution to Manufacturing: Recognition has also gone to John Clark, Director of Star Refrigeration's data monitoring and energy optimization spin-off, Star Data Analytics. His visionary work led to the development of Ethos, now supporting over 20 clients across more than 100 sites and processing over 40 billion data points annually. Colleagues hail him for setting new standards in energy performance optimization within the industry.
Company Perspective
Prof. Dave Pearson, Group Sustainable Development Director at Star Refrigeration, expressed his pride in the nominations, stating, "We are delighted to be recognized across three categories at the Made in Scotland Awards 2025. These nominations symbolize our team’s dedication and the significant impact of our technology in helping industries lower their carbon footprint and enhance efficiency while paving the way for a sustainable future."
The Made in Scotland Awards is part of Insider Media's distinguished 'Made in' series, which celebrates regional excellence in manufacturing across the UK. Winners at this event will progress to compete in the national Made in the UK Awards.
