Empowering Young Minds through Financial Education Games in Japan's Schools

Empowering Financial Literacy in Schools

In a pioneering initiative by BroadMind Inc., a financial service provider dedicated to enhancing life planning through financial power, a novel educational program was launched to teach fifth-grade students essential financial and life skills. This game-based learning experience was held on July 3, 2025, in Chigasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, involving 137 fifth graders.

The program, titled "Life Produce", aims to teach students how to craft their own life paths by offering them a chance to experience a simulated life through a specially designed card game. The objective isn't merely to earn money; instead, it focuses on utilizing limited resources—their time and money—to realize their dreams and objectives. By engaging in this educational experience, students learn the fundamentals of planning and preparation for their futures.

With this approach, BroadMind targets upper elementary, middle, and high school students, integrating the program into comprehensive studies, career education, and financial literacy classes. Through this initiative, over 1,300 students have experienced the game since its inception in September 2024.

Student Reflections on the Experience

Feedback from the participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Here are some highlights from their reflections:

1. Awareness of Financial Reality: Many students expressed realizing how significant it is for their parents to cover various expenses for extracurricular activities. One student commented on how acknowledging these financial responsibilities enriched their perspective on life.

2. Time Management Insights: Participating children noted that managing their time wisely opened up new possibilities. The game provided a glimpse into how their lives could unfold positively if they made smart choices.

3. Real-Life Lessons: The feedback included sentiments on personal growth. One student shared about the enriching experiences gained from navigating the challenges of parenting within the game, reflecting on the importance of life choices and planning.

4. Fun Learning Experiences: Many remarked on the enjoyment derived from the lessons about money management and time utilization. One student said, "Doing the game thoughtlessly was less fruitful than when I paid attention and planned during the second round. I learned how to navigate life and my finances effectively!"

5. Advice for Future Self: The students also created thoughtful pieces of advice for their future selves based on their in-game learnings. Suggestions included:
- "Focus on your dreams and prioritize yourself as you move forward in life."
- "Be cautious about becoming a freelancer; ensure you have a stable income before pursuing unstable opportunities."
- "Always value your time and health, and don't forget to invest in insurance for unexpected situations."

Through this hands-on program, BroadMind aims to instill valuable financial principles at an early age, ensuring that kids grow into adults capable of making informed financial decisions when necessary.
