Maiden Graduation at Winter Fancy Food Show 2025
On February 11, 2025, the Specialty Food Association (SFA) proudly announced the graduation of its inaugural cohort from the Maker Prep Course, held at the Winter Fancy Food Show, the first major food industry expo of the year. This hybrid educational program spanned six months and was designed to equip aspiring specialty food makers with essential knowledge and skills.
The Maker Prep Course combined in-person and virtual sessions, expert coaching, and collaborative learning. Participants gained critical insights into how to successfully launch, market, and distribute their unique food products. Phil Robinson, SFA's Senior Vice President of Member Development, expressed enthusiasm about the program saying, "We are committed to supporting early-stage specialty food makers who bring innovation and excitement to our industry. Our goal is to simplify the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) landscape, making it more accessible. Educating emerging entrepreneurs through initiatives like the Maker Prep Course is fundamental to our mission."
Among the graduates were a diverse group of food entrepreneurs, each bringing their unique products to the market. The Winter 2025 Class included businesses such as Peepal People, Black Girl Tamales, and many more, collectively showcasing the vibrant diversity in the specialty food sector. These graduates now have the tools necessary to navigate the challenges of the $207 billion specialty food industry, equipped with practical skills and mentorship that were integral to their education.
The Maker Prep Course offered more than just classroom instruction. Graduates participated in an online curriculum from July 2024 to January 2025. This included engaging digital resources, collaborative discussions via a dedicated chat platform, and personalized assignments to help participants apply learned concepts to their own businesses. Monthly coaching sessions with industry veterans provided invaluable networking and insider knowledge.
As part of the program, participants also enjoyed dedicated educational sessions at the 2024 Summer Fancy Food Show, a one-year tier membership for non-SFA members, and badges for pivotal industry events such as the Summer and Winter Fancy Food Shows. These experiences opened pathways for interaction with industry leaders, fostering relationships that will be crucial for future success.
At the Winter Fancy Food Show 2025, there was also the announcement of the next Maker Prep Course cohort, class of Summer 2025. Those interested in entering the program can seek additional information and register for future classes through the SFA’s official channels.
The Specialty Food Association, since its establishment in 1952, has dedicated itself to advocating for the growth and sustainability of the specialty food industry, which now encompasses over 4,000 member businesses worldwide. The association continues to impact the industry profoundly by showcasing diversity through exceptional food and beverage products.
