Dwight Eubanks: A Voice for Prostate Cancer Awareness
In a courageous move, Bravo TV star and celebrated Atlanta hair stylist,
Dwight Eubanks, has publicly announced his diagnosis of stage four prostate cancer. As National Men's Health and Pride Month commences, Eubanks is using his platform to not only share his personal battle but also to advocate for essential health screenings, particularly among Black men.
Dwight Eubanks, widely recognized for his stylish presence on the reality TV show
The Real Housewives of Atlanta, is not just a familiar face; he is a seasoned entertainer with over three decades in the fashion and cosmetology fields. His vibrant career also includes roles as the creative director for the Lisa Nicole Fashion Line on
Married to Medicine. Now, he has taken on a new role as a brand ambassador for
ZERO Prostate Cancer, an organization dedicated to raising awareness and combating this life-threatening disease.
Statistics show that
one in six Black men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, with a sobering reality that these men are 70% more likely to be diagnosed than their white counterparts and twice as likely to succumb to the illness. Eubanks emphasizes the importance of being proactive about health:
“A prostate cancer diagnosis is crushing but I'm grateful to still be in this fight and use my platform to help others impacted by this disease.” His message is clear: awareness, early screening, and becoming health advocates are vital.
Every two minutes, a man in the U.S. receives a prostate cancer diagnosis, and this year alone, over
300,000 new cases are anticipated, with dire outcomes for many. Dr. Alicia Morgans, a medical representative from the ZERO Board of Directors, highlights the critical nature of early detection.
“Prostate cancer can be curable with a 99% survival rate at five years when caught in its earliest stage,” Dr. Morgans states. Eubanks' decision to share his story aims to inspire others to get screened and understand their family medical history.
Courtney Bugler, the President and CEO of
ZERO Prostate Cancer, remarked,
“Dwight's voice and story will help redefine how Black men discuss this devastating disease within their communities — removing stigma and fostering conversation.” As Eubanks embarks on this vital advocacy journey, he plans to support initiatives like
Blitz the Barriers, aiming to save 100,000 lives by 2035 in the communities hardest hit by prostate cancer.
As one of the leading organizations in the fight against prostate cancer,
ZERO Prostate Cancer works tirelessly to provide resources, education, and advocacy to those affected. Since its inception in 1996, the organization has championed the cause, unlocking crucial funding for research and treatments while serving millions of individuals and families impacted by prostate cancer.
With his diagnosis, Eubanks not only represents countless men facing similar challenges but also stands as a beacon of hope and encouragement. His advocacy work is set to break down barriers and create a supportive environment for conversations about prostate cancer. The movement he’s creating encourages men, particularly in disadvantaged communities, to seek information and screenings in the battle against this disease.
As Eubanks combines his profound influence in the entertainment world with the urgent necessity of health advocacy, he aims to contribute significantly to a future where prostate cancer detection and care become accessible to all. His journey serves as a reminder that awareness and proactive measures can save lives, and he inspires many to advocate for their health and the well-being of their loved ones.
