BOTANIST Foundation Gives Grants to Promote Biodiversity and Nature Experiences

A Step Towards Biodiversity Conservation with BOTANIST Foundation

The BOTANIST Foundation, founded by I-ne in Osaka, Japan, is making strides in promoting plant biodiversity and creating opportunities for nature experiences. In a recent announcement, the foundation confirmed new grants awarded to the Osaka Municipal Nagai Botanical Garden and Yamasen-juku, a certified NPO based in Yame, Fukuoka. The grant presentation ceremonies took place on June 30, 2025, at the Nagai Botanical Garden, and on July 7, 2025, at Yamasen-juku.

About the BOTANIST Foundation Grant Program

The BOTANIST Foundation is dedicated to promoting an environment where humans coexist with nature. The organization aims to protect diverse plant ecosystems and provide people with opportunities to connect with nature. To achieve this vision, the foundation launched its grant program in 2024 in collaboration with various organizations.

This grant program is particularly focused on supporting activities related to the conservation of forests, Satoyama (countryside) areas, and urban parks, as well as initiatives that utilize these environments for nature experiences. In implementing this program, the foundation works alongside the Japan Philanthropy Association to evaluate the activity plans and achievements of grant recipient organizations.

In 2024, support was extended to C.W. Nicol Afan Forest Foundation and Nasu Heisei no Mori (Nasu Kogen Nature School), both of which conducted conservation activities and nature experience initiatives based in forest environments. For the year 2025, the BOTANIST Foundation is allocating up to 1.5 million yen annually to four selected organizations, for a funding period spanning from July 2025 to June 2026. Depending on the progress and outcomes during this time, grants may be extended for a maximum of three years. This year, the foundation has chosen to support the Nagai Botanical Garden and Yamasen-juku alongside two organizations previously funded in the previous year.

Comments from Nobuyoshi Mizutani - Director of BOTANIST Foundation

Nobuyoshi Mizutani, director and secretary-general of more trees, commented, “The interaction between forests and people is diverse. Urban green spaces serve as places of relaxation, Satoyama areas are integral to daily life, and remote mountains embody untouched nature, each holding unique values. By selecting the Osaka Municipal Nagai Botanical Garden and NPO Yamasen-juku as new grant recipients, we are establishing a wide-ranging support structure that spans from urban areas to remote mountains. This is a significant step for the BOTANIST Foundation.” He expressed hope that the Foundation’s ongoing activities will foster a better relationship between nature and people.
