A Unique Collaboration Between Artist GOMA and RINGO-TEX®
A new and exciting collaboration has emerged from Aomori Prefecture, showcasing a partnership between local artist GOMA and appcycle Inc., a company known for its eco-friendly initiatives. This collaboration will feature products made from RINGO-TEX®, a bio-based leather derived from apples, which represents a significant step towards sustainability in fashion and design.
On February 11, 2026, a pop-up store will open at AoMoLink in Akasaka, Tokyo, offering a unique chance for art and eco-conscious consumers to purchase limited-edition items that blend creativity with sustainability. This event follows a successful first phase held on February 7 and 8 in Aomori City at the Nebuta House Warasse, further establishing the project’s presence in both regional and urban markets.
The star of the pop-up will be two types of tote bags, each featuring GOMA’s iconic designs: the "Moon Monster" and "Crown Cat," crafted using the innovative RINGO-TEX® material. These designs not only highlight GOMA's artistic flair but also symbolize the synergy between art and sustainable practices. The bags are produced in limited quantities, ensuring exclusivity for those who appreciate unique, eco-friendly fashion.
In addition to the tote bags, the pop-up will also showcase a prototype of an "Art Panel" that combines RINGO-TEX® with leftover wooden frames from the wooden window manufacturer Nippon no Mado in Towada City, Aomori. The innovative art piece represents an exciting step in upcycling, merging waste products from the apple and timber industries to create striking visual art. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience the quality and aesthetic of RINGO-TEX® firsthand and gain insights into the creative processes involved.
The tote bags are meticulously sewn by Hachinohe Green Plants, a non-profit organization in Hachinohe City dedicated to providing work and support for individuals with disabilities. This collaboration expands into the realm of social welfare, blending craftsmanship with community empowerment. The project not only brings forth artistic expressions but also reflects a commitment to social responsibility and inclusivity.
Meanwhile, the pop-up store will feature a return of the successful Nebuta collaboration items, which were well-received during last year's Nebuta Festival in Aomori. Customers can once again purchase items like the Goldfish Nebuta Pouch and the Nebuta Lucky Wallet, allowing fans to cherish these traditional art forms.
About RINGO-TEX®
RINGO-TEX® is a remarkable eco-friendly leather that consists of 72-74% upcycled materials, primarily sourced from discarded apples and residues from juice production. This innovative material represents a forward leap in sustainable fashion, showing minimal environmental impact compared to conventional synthetic leathers. The development of RINGO-TEX® is a result of collaboration with Tohoku University, addressing the issues surrounding waste in the apple industry, which is vital in Aomori, Japan's top apple-producing region.
The artist GOMA, known for his vibrant and imaginative style, has received national acclaim. He overcame his ADHD and dyslexia challenges, creatively channeling them into his art, culminating in major exhibitions and awards such as the APPLE DESIGN AWARD. GOMA aims to combine art with societal good, sharing his journey with aspiring young artists through community outreach and workshops.
With this collaboration, appcycle intends to elevate the conversation around upcycling by merging artistic expression with sustainable material practices. By doing so, GOMA and appcycle are setting a precedent for the art and fashion industries—they are not just creating products; they’re crafting a narrative of hope for a more sustainable future.
Future Impact
As appcycle continues to innovate through collaborations like this, the company is devoted to establishing a sustainable business model that benefits local economies and the environment. The impact of combining resources from various sectors—agriculture, art, welfare, and sustainability—is profound. This project embodies the philosophy of intertwining these elements to create something valuable, pushing the boundaries of what is possible within the realms of art and environmental stewardship.
As GOMA and appcycle pave the way for sustainable creativity, they invite the public to join them on this transformative journey towards a greener future in the art and design landscape.
