Eastern Michigan University Plans New Business College Building to Enhance Student Experience

Eastern Michigan University to Construct New Home for College of Business

On October 15, 2026, Eastern Michigan University (EMU) is poised to celebrate an important milestone with a groundbreaking ceremony for a new facility dedicated to its College of Business. This event marks the beginning of a significant transformation aimed at enhancing educational experiences and resources for students. The newly renovated Pierce Hall will serve as the new hub for the College of Business, featuring contemporary design and resources tailored to meet the evolving needs of today’s workforce.

The renovation and expansion of Pierce Hall are designed to create a modern, student-centered facility that emphasizes collaborative learning and industry engagement. According to Amy Hietapelto, the dean of the College of Business, the new building is an embodiment of EMU’s commitment to preparing students for a dynamic and rapidly changing job market. She elaborated, "The new home for the College of Business will provide contemporary educational spaces, collaborative meeting areas, and a gateway for faculty, student, community, and industry engagement, designed to foster career readiness, innovation, collaboration, and hands-on learning."

Key Features of the New Facility

The project promises a variety of new features that focus on enhancing the student learning experience:
  • - Student Success Suite: This will serve as a centralized hub for vital academic and career resources, including support for both undergraduate and graduate students in areas like advising, internships, and professional development.
  • - Collaboration Spaces: The design incorporates numerous gathering areas, including a student HUB, breakout rooms, and flexible meeting spaces that promote teamwork and community among students.
  • - Modern Learning Environments: The facility will include advanced classrooms and specialized labs, notably the Stephen J. Klotz Financial Learning Center, which is geared towards facilitating practical and engaging learning opportunities.
  • - Engagement Areas: These flexible spaces are designed for interactions between students and industry leaders, featuring an Executive Training Center and a Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, equipped to host various initiatives and collaborations.
  • - Faculty Areas: The upper floors will house dedicated spaces for faculty and leadership, fostering an environment that recognizes and supports their contributions to academic excellence.
  • - Infrastructure Improvements: Significant upgrades will be made to the building’s infrastructure, including enhancements to the chilled-water system, cooling tower, air handlers, and electrical components, ensuring a conducive learning environment.

EMU President Brendan Kelly underscored the importance of this investment in educational infrastructure as a means to benefit both students and the regional economy. He stated, "Investing in the future of the College of Business is an investment in our students, our region, and Michigan's workforce. This project will create an environment where students can learn by doing, build meaningful connections with business and community leaders, and develop the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing economy. The transformation of Pierce Hall reflects Eastern's commitment to providing our students with the spaces, experiences, and opportunities they need to succeed."

The first phase of the project is set to consolidate essential academic resources while also offering new opportunities for applied, hands-on learning. Such specialized environments will allow students to cultivate the technological, analytical, and collaborative skills highly sought after by local employers in Michigan.
