Achieving New Heights in Automation with Souther COALA
In recent developments at the Oi Vehicle Base of JR Tokai, a groundbreaking automated transport solution named Souther COALA has been instrumental in enhancing operational efficiency. Developed collaboratively by Doog Inc. and Shinkansen Maintenance Tokai (SMT), this innovative system has managed to achieve an impressive 40,000 kilometers of automated transport in its first operational year – equating to a journey around the globe.
What is Souther COALA?
Souther COALA is a cutting-edge automation solution that emerged from three years of collaborative development between Doog and SMT. Designed specifically for managing maintenance logistics at Shinkansen railroads, this patented system effectively transports essential items and waste from the train interiors via specially designed docking carts. The entire framework is constructed based on the Souther Standard vehicle chassis, ensuring that it meets the unique requirements of the rail industry.
At the Oi Vehicle Base, a significant workflow happens along a 400-meter platform designed to accommodate 16 cars in a single Shinkansen formation. Eight Souther COALA robots operate in coordinated groups, optimizing long-distance transportation with remarkable efficiency. Each of the two maintenance sheds at the base hosts eight operational units, managing 150 dedicated docking carts at any given time. The system autonomously manages the logistic tasks, ensuring seamless 24/7 operations.
Background for Development
Historically, the transportation of collected waste and maintenance supplies over substantial distances at Shinkansen base facilities relied on manual labor using hand-pushed carts. This method contributed to a significant workload and posed challenges amidst labor shortages. Considering the necessity of this logistic function for continuous vehicle maintenance, Doog and SMT identified the urgent need to alleviate strain on 'dressers' (the personnel managing these tasks). As such, collaborative efforts forged the Souther COALA, aimed at enhancing the work experience and efficiency for maintenance teams.
Operational Impact
The implementation of Souther COALA has transformed operations at the Oi Vehicle Base. The first maintenance shed, hosting eight robots, covers about 1,520 kilometers monthly, while the second maintenance shed achieves approximately 1,950 kilometers. Altogether, the 16 robotic units amassed an astounding 41,800 kilometers over the year, effectively equal to circumnavigating the Earth.
The previous methods, which relied heavily on manual effort, have been significantly optimized. Not only are human workloads reduced, but the dressers can now direct their focus toward critical maintenance tasks and infrastructural management that require specialized skills.
Looking Towards the Future
With a commitment to establishing a robust workforce and sustainable operational practices, SMT's philosophy underscores the importance of leveraging machines for tasks that can be automated while reserving human talents for unique responsibilities. This vision is reflected in the integration of Souther COALA and is set to expand as its successful implementation at Oi moves to other facilities like Mishima and Nagoya locales.
By continuing this collaboration with SMT and JR Tokai, Doog aims to further introduce automation solutions, paving the way for safer and more efficient workplace environments.
