On October 16, 2026, Florida Southern College commemorated an important milestone in its history by dedicating the Army ROTC building in honor of distinguished alumnus, Lt. Gen. Donald L. Kerrick. This dedication not only serves as a recognition of Kerrick's remarkable military career but also as a commitment to future generations of leaders. The event was attended by students, faculty, and community members who gathered to celebrate the legacy of service and sacrifice that Kerrick embodies.
A Tribute to a Distinguished Alumnus
Lt. Gen. Donald L. Kerrick's journey began when he graduated from Florida Southern College in 1971. Upon receiving his commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, he embarked on a military career that would see him rise to senior leadership roles, including positions during pivotal moments in American history. His contributions to military operations in Southeast Asia and his role during Operation Desert Storm are testaments to his leadership capabilities.
In addition to his combat experience, Kerrick held significant roles in national security operations, culminating in his appointment as Deputy National Security Advisor to the President of the United States in 2000. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to service, earning numerous accolades, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal and the Bronze Star Medal.
During the dedication ceremony, Dr. Jeremy Martin, president of Florida Southern College, expressed the tremendous influence Kerrick has had on the institution and beyond. “Lt. Gen. Kerrick represents the very best of Florida Southern College and the extraordinary impact our graduates can have on the world,” he stated, underscoring the values of leadership, character, and service that Kerrick exemplifies.
Advancing Military Training and Leadership
Kerrick’s support extends beyond recognition. His generous contributions have facilitated significant renovations and equipment upgrades for the Army ROTC Moccasin Battalion, enhancing training facilities for aspiring military officers. The newly named Lt. Gen. Donald L. Kerrick Building stands as a symbol of excellence in military education and will provide the necessary resources for students to develop their leadership skills.
Continuing the celebration, the following day, October 17, Florida Southern College hosted the second annual Lt. Gen. Donald L. Kerrick JROTC Raider Competition. This highly anticipated event welcomed 22 high school teams from around Florida, providing them with an opportunity to showcase their skills and teamwork through physical challenges designed to test their endurance and leadership capabilities.
The competition featured various tests, including a 5K run, One Rope Bridge, Cross Country Rescue, Tire Flip, and a Physical Team Test. Participants competed in male, female, and mixed divisions, with awards recognizing both individual and team performances.
Lt. Col. Harry Dingle, professor of military science, remarked, “Leadership is developed through experience, discipline, and the willingness to push beyond perceived limits. The Raider Competition gives young cadets an opportunity to put those principles into action.” This competition not only fosters camaraderie among high school cadets but also introduces them to the educational and leadership opportunities available through Florida Southern's Army ROTC program.
A Legacy of Service and Leadership
Established in 1951, the Army ROTC Moccasin Battalion at Florida Southern has a storied history of preparing students for military service. Numerous distinguished military and civilian leaders have emerged from its ranks, including nine general officers. The dedication of the Lt. Gen. Donald L. Kerrick Army ROTC Building and the accompanying Raider Competition serve as reminders of Kerrick's legacy of service and commitment to developing the leaders of tomorrow.
