Exploring the Intersection of Culinary Art and Contemporary Design at Miyou Mibou

Exploring the Intersection of Culinary Art and Contemporary Design at Miyou Mibou

In Tokyo's Kyobashi district, a new culinary venture is setting the stage for a transformative dining experience. Miyou Mibou, operated by L&L Corporation, is not just your ordinary restaurant specializing in mutton dishes; it is about to embark on an innovative project that merges the worlds of fine dining and contemporary art. This project aims to create a unique space where guests can enjoy exquisite meals while immersing themselves in the beauty of modern art.

The brain behind this bold initiative is Liang Baozhang, the representative of the Mibou group and an accomplished painter himself. Liang has dedicated his life to intertwining the concepts of creation and culinary artistry, leading the creative direction for the design of all Mibou establishments. From the outset, Miyou Mibou was envisioned not just as a place to enjoy food but also as a venue that embodies art.

Beginning January 22, 2026, Miyou Mibou will feature an exhibition and sale curated by contemporary artist Mugi Nakajima. This inaugural exhibit will showcase a selection of Nakajima's works created from 2021 to 2025, highlighting recent pieces that respond to the unique environment of the restaurant. Unlike conventional galleries adorned with quiet white walls, this space will come alive with scents, sounds, conversations, and the very ambiance of dining, turning art into a more visceral, corporeal experience.

Mugi Nakajima, a native of Nagano and raised in Osaka, is widely recognized for his abstract paintings that reflect a continuous evolution of the creative process. A graduate of the Kyoto City University of Arts, Nakajima's artistic endeavors have extended beyond traditional exhibitions to encompass workshops and collaborative projects. His upcoming showcase at Miyou Mibou is designed to adapt to the particular characteristics of the space, creating engaging and dynamic interactions for diners.

Artist's Statement

In this exhibition, I have selected works created between 2021 and 2025 that reflect the spatial dynamics of the restaurant. Although the titles may differ, all pieces were produced using my unique technique of pouring paint from a container without the use of brushes. By tilting a fixed canvas and pouring mixed acrylic paint, the color flows with the force of gravity, leaving traces that are fixed over time. Additionally, rotating the canvas during the process adds various forces, resulting in a vibrant space of color that feels liberated from physical constraints. I hope visitors can enjoy this interplay of materiality and gravity in my work.

About Miyou Mibou

Located on the second floor of the TODA BUILDING, Miyou Mibou takes pride in presenting a culinary experience that combines the sophistication of Chinese cooking with a focus on high-quality mutton sourced from around the world. The skilled chefs employ diverse techniques, including charcoal grilling, stir-frying, and simmering, ensuring that the natural flavors of the meat are at the forefront while spices complement rather than overpower them. This restaurant offers a refined, tranquil atmosphere, allowing for a new experience in what they call “Mutton Chinese Cuisine.”

As Miyou Mibou ventures into this experimental art space concept, the project symbolizes an ongoing exploration of the blurred lines between gastronomy and artistry. This will not be a one-time event but rather a continuous dialogue about the relationship between culinary delights and artistic expression, inviting patrons to join in this savory journey.
