Shin-Yokohama Hosts Groundbreaking Art Event
On March 26, 2023, at the Shin-Yokohama headquarters, the Pal System Kanagawa cooperatively unveiled its first-ever art exhibition titled "Pal Art" showcasing the creative works of disabled artists. The event drew around 50 participants, including representatives from welfare organizations and local government officials. This initiative aims to foster ongoing relationships with support groups and give artists the opportunity for their work to be featured and rotated every three months.
A Vision for Inclusivity
Yosuke Sakai, a staff member at the Pal System Kanagawa's hiring department, started the event by outlining the organization's vision for 2030: to create a community where everyone recognizes and supports each other. The initiative aligns with the prefecture's advice to foster spaces where individuals with disabilities can thrive. The "Pal Art" exhibition is a significant step towards this goal, and plans are in place to roll out similar exhibits across three more centers—Miyamae, Asao, and Yokohama North—eventually aiming for a total of 13 centers.
Creating Opportunities for Artists
The collaboration with various regional support organizations allows for the leasing of artworks, which are set to be rotated quarterly under financial support generated from disability employment adjustment subsidies. Currently, Pal System Kanagawa employs 21 individuals with disabilities, exceeding the statutory employment rate, thereby qualifying for additional funding. These funds will not only sustain the art initiative but also help amplify the presence and achievements of disabled individuals in the community.
During the exhibition, participants were encouraged to engage with the artists, thereby creating a dialogue that enhances understanding of the challenges faced by disabled creators.
Remarks from Leaders
Junko Fujita, the chairperson of Pal System Kanagawa, expressed delight at providing a platform for artists to showcase their work, fostering a sense of happiness within the community. She highlighted the alignment between her organization’s vision and the Kanagawa's charter of a coexisting society, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with various stakeholders to ensure artists can participate safely and positively in society.
Tomonobu Ohno from the Kanagawa Children and Welfare Bureau praised the organization's efforts, recalling how the exhibition coincided with a significant remembrance for past incidents involving individuals with disabilities. He stressed the importance of promoting understanding and empathy within the community.
Art with a Purpose
The artworks showcased at the event were produced by talented artists Yoshitsugu Hiramoto and Aya Miyoshi, who are part of a nonprofit organization called Pukapuka. They are also involved in a farm and food-related businesses where they create various items and artworks tailored to orders. According to their coordinator, Sae Uozumi, the process of creating art is rooted in collaboration and the unique abilities of each artist, culminating in pieces that reflect their diverse experiences.
Community Collaboration
Additionally, informational displays and signboards for the artworks were crafted from local bamboo, showcasing yet another aspect of community involvement. Chikuchiyomaru, an artist from the IKIIKI Company, highlighted the laborious process of creating signs without wasting local resources. This innovative use of bamboo not only addresses environmental concerns but also connects local producers with the art initiative's objectives.
At the event, guests also enjoyed snacks and treats produced by Pukapuka, further facilitating interactions among attendees. Displays included intricate "bamboo lights" created by participants of the IKIIKI Company, emphasizing hands-on learning and craftsmanship.
Looking Ahead
As Pal System Kanagawa continues its mission, it remains committed to creating spaces where diverse community members can thrive. This art initiative exemplifies their dedication to nurturing creativity, promoting collaboration, and advocating for inclusivity, fundamentally enriching the fabric of their community.
