BAIC FOTON Unveils Innovative Heavy Trucks and Hybrid Pickup for African Market Empowerment

BAIC FOTON Expands Its Footprint in Africa with New Vehicle Launches

On October 29, during the Africa Regional Partner Conference themed “Drive to Great,” BAIC FOTON introduced its latest offerings tailored for the diverse African market: the GALAXUS R5 and GALAXUS C5 heavy trucks, alongside the TUNLAND V plug-in hybrid pickup. This initiative is designed to strengthen FOTON’s product portfolio and response to the multifaceted logistics and mobility needs across the continent.

Innovations in Heavy Trucking

The GALAXUS R5 is engineered for cross-border logistics, port operations, and fuel transportation. It emphasizes efficiency, energy savings, safety, and driver comfort. With an impressive aerodynamic design featuring a drag coefficient as low as 0.476, it offers two distinct powertrain configurations that help fleets manage costs effectively during long-distance operations. The vehicle has passed stringent crash testing protocols, ensuring high safety standards.

In terms of driver accommodation, the GALAXUS R5 boasts a spacious cab equipped with modern Grammer seats and a wider sleeper, specifically designed for long-haul comfort. It is expected to function optimally in various climatic conditions, supported by a robust warranty of 3 years or up to 450,000 kilometers.

Moving to the GALAXUS C5, this model is tailored for more challenging terrains, making it ideal for sectors like mining and construction logistics. It features an impressive ground clearance of over 750 mm and advanced capabilities to navigate complex road conditions. The truck’s robust frame is built using high-strength steel, ensuring durability and stability under heavy loads, supported by extensive testing for reliability.

To tackle environmental factors, the GALAXUS C5 includes multiple anti-corrosion measures and has been rigorously tested against extreme weather conditions, solidifying FOTON's commitment to quality and resilience.

Pioneering Plug-in Hybrid Technology

Alongside the heavy trucks, FOTON launched the TUNLAND V PHEV, which is set to make waves in the hybrid vehicle market within Africa. This model utilizes a sophisticated hybrid architecture that provides powerful performance with a 2.0T hybrid engine. It promises an electric range of 87 kilometers and an impressive total range of up to 1,000 kilometers via its WLTP testing standards.

With a strong emphasis on reducing dependence on public charging infrastructure, the TUNLAND V features an efficient DC fast-charging system that can recharge from 30% to 80% in just 30 minutes, enhancing its practicality for daily use. The vehicle also boasts superior towing capacity and an advanced safety profile, solidifying its place in the competitive vehicle market.

Commitment to the African Market

These launches signify a substantial step for BAIC FOTON as it diversifies its offerings from commercial vehicles to cover broader logistics areas, including industrial transport and sustainable energy solutions. With a manufacturing base in South Africa, FOTON is poised to enhance its market presence, supporting the ongoing transformation in Africa's logistics and industrial sectors.

FOTON’s strategic efforts underline a commitment not only to improving transportation efficiency but also to contributing to the growth of the African economy through localized production and innovation. As these new vehicles hit the market, they represent a forward-thinking approach, aiming to adapt to the various challenges and opportunities present in Africa today.
