UMITO Partners Achieves First Friend of the Sea Certification for Pacific Sardine Oil in Japan

UMITO Partners, based in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, has successfully supported the application for the Friend of the Sea (FOS) certification of fish oil derived from Pacific sardines. This certification, a gold standard in environmental sustainability, was awarded to Ikeshita Sangyo, located in Hiroo, Hokkaido. The approval process was facilitated by Kanematsu Corporation from Chiyoda, Tokyo, which is responsible for global sales. UMITO Partners provided expert consulting in the marine and fisheries sectors throughout the preparatory phase and during the implementation of the certification process.

This landmark achievement of obtaining a FOS certification for fish oil sourced from Pacific sardines marks the first of its kind in Japan. As global demand for sustainable seafood sources continues to grow, this accomplishment introduces new value to the sustainable fisheries market.

Background: Why Focus on Fish Oil Sustainability Now?

The burgeoning aquaculture and health food markets, driven by a rising global population, heavily rely on essential ingredients like fishmeal and fish oil. Consequently, producers are increasingly required to demonstrate sustainability in their sourcing practices.

However, the Pacific sardine, a vital marine resource, traverses international waters, complicating resource management rules. Until now, there has been a lack of officially sustainable fish oil or fishmeal products available domestically, leading to a heavy dependence on foreign sourcing.

Determined to safeguard Japan's rich marine ecosystems and enhance the international competitiveness of Japanese fisheries, Ikeshita Sangyo and its partners began their ambitious journey of self-reliance.

Recent Developments: Achieving International Standards through On-site Improvements

In July 2022, Ikeshita Sangyo, Kanematsu, Hamahira Fishing, and UMITO Partners launched a collaborative project aimed at enhancing the sustainability of Pacific sardine purse seine fishing in Hiroo, Hokkaido. Over the ensuing four years, they implemented on-ground improvements that have been pivotal in elevating industry standards.

Their advanced initiatives—addressing protected species, monitoring bycatch, and ensuring safe release practices—have been recognized as part of a monumental effort to secure the future of fisheries. In 2024, this project is even set to receive the Good Design Award, indicating its impact and significance.

Leveraging the sophisticated operational framework and scientific data management developed over the past four years, the group tackled the FOS certification process, spanning a broad spectrum of sustainability metrics encompassing environmental impact and worker conditions. Eventually, they cleared the rigorous assessment process, leading to the groundbreaking recognition of sustainable fish oil derived from Pacific sardines in Japan.

As a result of this certification, the transparency of sourcing practices and local efforts have been objectively validated, allowing for the supply of environmentally responsible Pacific sardine fish oil, which meets international procurement standards.

Understanding Friends of the Sea (FOS) Certification

The FOS certification scheme is operated by the World Sustainability Organization (WSO) and recognizes the sustainability of marine-derived products and fisheries operations globally. This certification extends beyond just fish to include fishmeal, fish oil, and Omega-3 products, ensuring widespread accountability and credibility. The comprehensive evaluation process assesses aspects such as the sustainability of fish stocks, compliance with regulations, ecosystem impact, bycatch management, and energy and waste management practices on vessels and in processing plants.

Voices from the Stakeholders

Toichi Ikeshita, President of Ikeshita Sangyo: "As a fishmeal and fish oil manufacturer, ensuring the sustainability of the marine resources we rely on is crucial. With this certification, we aim to continue supplying eco-friendly ingredients in collaboration with our fishing partners and stakeholders."

Satoshi Haga, Deputy Manager, Grain Feed Division at Kanematsu Corporation: "This certification marks a crucial step in showcasing the new potential of Japan's marine resources. Kanematsu will continue promoting responsible sourcing and value creation alongside our partners."

Rui Okamoto, UMITO Organizational Department: "The on-ground initiatives we developed with Ikeshita Sangyo, Kanematsu, and Hamahira Fishing have come to fruition with this milestone. UMITO Partners will continue supporting the sustainability efforts of Pacific sardine fisheries."
