American Diabetes Association Appoints Dr. Rita Rastogi Kalyani as Chief Scientific Officer
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has made a pivotal decision in the fight against diabetes and obesity by appointing Dr. Rita Rastogi Kalyani as its new Chief Scientific and Medical Officer. This announcement came on May 6, 2025, and Dr. Kalyani will officially join the organization on August 11. Dr. Kalyani is not an unfamiliar face at ADA, having volunteered for nearly 20 years. She currently serves on the organization’s board of directors as the president of medicine and science. As a professor at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Medicine, where she has been part of the faculty for almost 15 years, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing diabetes care on both national and international fronts.
Throughout her tenure, Dr. Kalyani has excelled as a clinician-scientist, focusing on epidemiological and patient-oriented research. Her groundbreaking work has uncovered vital insights into conditions like skeletal muscle loss, physical disability, and frailty associated with diabetes. She has also led research exploring sex differences in cardiovascular diseases related to diabetes, which have contributed to reshaping primary prevention guidelines.

Dr. Kalyani’s credentials are impressive, boasting over 175 peer-reviewed publications, including a significant solo-authored review on contemporary treatments for type 2 diabetes published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2021. As a principal investigator on numerous National Institutes of Health-funded initiatives, she has attracted over $30 million in research funding, underscoring her prominence in the field.
As the director of the Diabetes Management Service within the Total Pancreatectomy Islet Auto Transplant program at Johns Hopkins, she has led an innovative clinical program recognized across the U.S. and internationally. Dr. Kalyani’s leadership has fostered statewide diabetes initiatives in Maryland and encouraged collaborations spanning the Caribbean, Middle East, and Asia.
