SIBIONICS and PharmaSens Discover New Frontiers in Automated Insulin Management at EASD 2026

SIBIONICS and PharmaSens at EASD 2026: A New Era in Diabetes Care

During the 2026 European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) meeting, SIBIONICS showcased a groundbreaking initiative titled "See More, Act Earlier." This innovative approach merges continuous monitoring with advancements in diabetes care. The presentation unfolded in three significant chapters, each focusing on crucial aspects of diabetes management:

1. See More Beyond Glucose: This section emphasized the integration of glucose monitoring, ketone bodies, and combined parameters, shedding light on the multifaceted nature of diabetes care.
2. Act Earlier From Insight to Intervention: Here, the focus was on multimodal detection and insulin administration, advocating for proactive care that reacts swiftly to patient data.
3. Go Further Realizing the Unimagined: This chapter explored broader applications of biosensors, highlighting potential future developments in diabetes technology.

The conference also featured an industry symposium titled "From Sensors to Integrated Care: Emerging Technologies Shaping the Future of Diabetes Management." Led by eminent figures such as Professor Mark Evans from the University of Cambridge and Dr. Guido Freckmann from Germany's Institute of Diabetes and Technology, the symposium examined the implications of emerging technologies in diabetes care.

During the symposium, Professor Karolina Kędzierska-Kapuza presented insights into continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) tailored for patients with type 3c diabetes. Professor Wei Qiang discussed the accuracy of CGM technologies, while Professor Andrej Janež tackled the monitoring of ketone bodies, a critical aspect in the era of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1). Notably, Professor Ahmad Haidar outlined research findings from the SMART02 feasibility study, which is exploring the integration of glucose monitoring and insulin administration.

The SMART02 trial involved an initial prototype named "niia signature," collaboratively developed by PharmaSens and SIBIONICS since their partnership announcement in June 2025. The niia signature aims to combine CGM, insulin delivery, and an automated glucose control algorithm (AGC) within a single wearable patch. This innovation seeks to simplify the diabetes management process by reducing the reliance on multiple devices for automated insulin delivery (AID).

Challenges addressed during the study included maintaining accurate glucose measurements when insulin is administered near the sensor. The study found that temporary interference after an insulin bolus was rare and occurred primarily with doses of 10 units or more. In these cases, the likelihood of interference ranged from 20% to 25%, with the sensor signal typically recovering fully approximately 20 minutes post-administration.

In the latter stages of the study, the prototype was also evaluated alongside the AGC algorithm, developed under the supervision of Professor Ahmad Haidar. Together, the niia patchpump by PharmaSens, the SiBionics sensor, and the AGC algorithm exhibited consistent performance throughout the trial. These revelations, presented at the SiBionics booth, signify a pivotal initial step in the development of advanced diabetes management solutions.

The integration of clinical needs with emerging technologies through the niia signature project exemplifies a forward-thinking approach towards enhancing the practicality and usability of future AID systems. Continuous research will be paramount to assess the device’s performance and clinical potential.

It's important to note that the niia signature remains a research prototype and has not been approved or authorized for sale in any market.
