A New Era for Youth Empowerment

On November 24, 2025, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northwest Suburbs (BGCNWS) embarked on a transformative journey by breaking ground on the renovation of the Woodlands Impact Center. This significant event was celebrated with a ceremonial wall-breaking attended by over 150 community leaders, dignitaries, and supporters in Carpentersville, Illinois.

The renovation project, scheduled for completion in late summer 2026, represents a $13.2 million investment aimed at creating a state-of-the-art facility for approximately 550 middle and high school students from Carpentersville and Barrington. The newly designed 40,000-square-foot center will be an essential resource, providing a comprehensive array of after-school, summer, and daytime programs, as well as vital community services.

Originally known as the Woodlands School, the center will feature a variety of innovative spaces:

• - BuildLab and CreateLab: Purpose-built areas for hands-on learning and creative exploration.
• - TechLab: A designated space for podcasting and recording, allowing youth to express themselves in new ways.
• - CulinaryLab: Offering cooking classes that include life skills and professional certification training.
• - Gymnasium: A multi-functional space to promote athletics and recreational activities.
• - Community Resource Center: A hub providing services such as counseling, food, clothing, and potential medical assistance.

These facilities are designed to enrich the educational experience and promote academic success by incorporating career and essential skills development, character building and leadership training, health and financial literacy, and technological education alongside engaging programs in arts, sports, and fitness.

During the ceremony, Eliana Rodriguez, a ten-year member of BGCNWS and the current Youth of the Year, passionately shared her journey and the influence of the organization on her life. As a participant in the nonprofit's Think Learn Create Change program, she had the opportunity to advocate for critical issues, including food insecurity and mental health, in Washington, D.C. Rodriguez expressed her gratitude for the support she received throughout her years at BGCNWS and looks forward to pursuing her passion for pastry arts at Elgin Community College, where she has earned a full scholarship.

BGCNWS Board President, Susan Harkin, addressed attendees, emphasizing that the renovation represents more than just physical upgrades; it symbolizes breaking barriers and extending opportunities to every young person who enters the center. She stated, "Today, we are not just breaking a wall — we are breaking barriers, opening doors, and expanding opportunities for every youth who walks through our doors."
