Celebrating the Next Generation of Innovators
On March 25, 2026, EXPLR celebrated a significant milestone in educational achievement by announcing the 55 middle and high school students selected as the 2026 National STEM Champions. These exceptional young minds are set to showcase their groundbreaking innovations at the National STEM Festival, taking place from June 24 to 27 in Washington, D.C. This festival is not only a platform for recognition but also coincides with America's 250 years of innovation, underscoring the importance of fostering new talent in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The Journey to Becoming Champions
The selection process was fiercely competitive, with an astonishing acceptance rate of less than 5%. Candidates hailed from all corners of the United States, including 47 states and 4 territories, demonstrating the wide-reaching talent present in America's youth. Over 60% of the chosen champions are young women, a compelling indicator of growth in female representation within STEM fields, particularly important during Women’s History Month.
These champions have not only impressed with their ideas but have also developed working prototypes, file patents, and conducted advanced research that addresses pressing issues within various industries such as healthcare, government, and technology. Innovations showcased range from AI-powered surgical systems, advancements in cancer diagnostics, to solutions for sustainable energy transitions.
Profiles of Excellence
Each champion, along with a guardian, will be awarded an expense-paid trip to Washington D.C., where they will present their inventions to influential leaders in business, academia, and government. At the festival, guests will be invited to explore a free Build Day expo, highlighting the ingenuity and creativity of America’s future leaders.
Jenny Buccos, Co-Director of the National STEM Festival and CEO of EXPLR, remarked, “The 2026 Champions have set new standards for innovation at their age. They are already making strides in developing the technologies and solutions that America requires. Our goal is to ensure that those capable of amplifying their work are aware of their achievements.” In addition to their Champion status, eight students will receive special awards recognizing extraordinary accomplishments in areas like Indigenous ingenuity, health sciences, space innovation, and app development.
