Vale Base Metals Celebrates Successful Cobalt Production Test at Voisey's Bay Mine

Vale Base Metals has announced a significant milestone with the successful completion of the cobalt throughput test at its renowned Voisey's Bay mine, located in Newfoundland and Labrador. The test, conducted over a consecutive 90-day period, achieved an impressive average throughput rate of 93.7%, surpassing the required minimum of 85% stipulated in its streaming agreement with Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. and Ecora Resources PLC. This achievement is a testament to the mine’s efficient operation and highlights Vale’s commitment to excellence in the mining sector.

Shaun Usmar, the General Manager of Vale Base Metals, expressed his enthusiasm for this achievement, noting it as a critical milestone for the Voisey's Bay operation. He pointed out that this accomplishment underscores Voisey's successful transition to underground mining, allowing it to not only meet production expectations but exceed them significantly. "This is an important achievement for Voisey's Bay," Usmar stated, emphasizing the effective transformation from a previously open-pit operation following the completion of a multi-year expansion project that enabled underground extraction.

He further acknowledged the hard work and dedication of the entire Voisey's Bay team, including Roberto Damasceno and Pieter Loock. Their commitment has been pivotal in reaching this new level of performance, showcasing Vale Base Metals' evolution into a safe, reliable, and cost-competitive operator that consistently meets its objectives and commitments.

The Voisey's Bay mine, which first began operations in 2005 as an open-pit operation, underwent a significant expansion that transitioned it to underground mining by the end of 2024. This move not only ensures its longevity as a vital economic contributor to Newfoundland and Labrador but also positions it as a reliable source of high-quality, low-carbon nickel, copper, and cobalt for many years to come.

Vale Base Metals continues to be a leading force in nickel production worldwide and is also a major contributor to copper and cobalt markets with a focus on responsible sourcing practices. Headquartered in London, UK, and globally operated from Toronto, Canada, Vale Base Metals stands firm in its commitment to sustainable mining operations across various regions including Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario, Manitoba, Indonesia, Brazil, and Japan. Vale S.A. holds a dominant position as a majority shareholder owning 90% of Vale Base Metals, complemented by a 10% stake held by Manara Minerals Investment Company.

As the demand for cobalt rises, particularly in electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy solutions, Vale's successful cobalt throughput test positions the Voisey's Bay mine as a key player in the global supply chain. This move not only strengthens the company's market standing but also contributes to environmentally responsible mining practices, aligning with global sustainability goals.
