A Celebration of Cloudy Vinegar in Nihonbashi
From February 16 to 28, 2026, Nihonbashi Takashimaya S.C. will host a unique event titled "Gifting Health with Cloudy Vinegar Preserved by Brewers Across Japan." Situated on the first basement floor, this exhibition will spotlight the traditional craft of cloudy vinegar, which has captured the attention of health-conscious consumers once more.
Cloudy vinegar, rich in acetic acid bacteria, is a time-honored condiment dating back to the Edo period when filtration techniques were not advanced. In recent years, its health benefits have gained recognition, leading various brewers across the nation to revive the production of this unique vinegar. The event will include tastings of selected varieties and the sale of exclusive dishes made with cloudy vinegar, perfect for supporting your health in the spring season.
What to Expect
As part of this special exhibition, visitors can sample 11 distinctive cloudy vinegar products crafted by renowned Japanese brewers:
- - Kanesho (Aomori): Offers the "Cloudy Apple Vinegar 'Sozuyuki'" at 1,296 JPY for a 500ml bottle, made from fresh apples using exclusive fermentation with indigenous yeasts from the World Heritage site, Shirakami.
- - Sunomiya Brewery (Chiba): Features "Enzyme Vinegar 'Essence of Persimmon'" for 2,430 JPY (230ml), carefully aged for 3 to 4 years without filtering or heating.
- - Tobaya Vinegar Shop (Fukui): Sells their 360ml "Cloudy Vinegar" for 1,620 JPY, crafted using traditional methods that ensure a rich, natural flavor.
- - Iio Brewery (Kyoto): Introduces "Premium Cloudy Vinegar" at 2,160 JPY per 360ml, made from rice grown without pesticides and crafted meticulously by a skilled toji (brewer).
- - Tamanoi Vinegar (Osaka): Offers an "Organic Cloudy Raw Apple Vinegar" for 1,078 JPY (500ml), celebrated for its rich apple flavor.
- - Onomichi Vinegar (Hiroshima): Presents "Pure Red Vinegar" at 1,944 JPY (500ml) that boasts a robust aromatic profile.
- - Onomichi Vinegar also features a unique "Cloudy Citrus Peel Vinegar" at 1,080 JPY (500ml), crafted using the rare citrus peel since the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
- - Shobun Vinegar (Fukuoka): Offers their “Kasu-mikuro Vinegar” for 1,782 JPY (200ml), rich in amino acids.
