Debevoise & Plimpton Strengthens Antitrust Practice with New Partner George Nierlich

Debevoise & Plimpton Expands Antitrust Representation with George Nierlich

In a significant move underscoring its commitment to providing top-tier legal support, Debevoise & Plimpton LLP has announced the addition of George "Chip" Nierlich as a partner within its Antitrust Group. Chip comes to the firm with impressive credentials, including a strong background within the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). His experience there, particularly as the Acting Director of Litigation, places him at the forefront of critical antitrust matters, especially as businesses maneuver through the increasingly complex landscape of technology-related mergers and conduct challenges.

Peter Furci, the presiding partner of Debevoise, commented on the ongoing importance of antitrust scrutiny in corporate transactions and growth strategies. He stated, “Clients are in need of advisers who grasp both the enforcement climate and the operational aspects that influence their substantial decisions.” With Nierlich’s extensive background, both in DOJ and private practice—where he has spent nearly two decades—he is poised to strengthen Debevoise’s offerings considerably.

Tim Cornell, another partner within the Antitrust Group, praised Nierlich's vast experience in leading intricate merger investigations and litigating antitrust cases. “His insights into the DOJ’s evaluative processes and approach to investigations will bring immense value to clients navigating these pressing antitrust concerns,” Cornell added.

Nierlich expressed enthusiasm about rejoining the private sector, citing Debevoise’s robust transactional, litigation practices, and its cooperative culture as major factors influencing his decision. He stated, “I'm thrilled to return to private practice at Debevoise, where I can leverage both my governmental and private sector experience to benefit our clients.”

During his tenure at the DOJ, Nierlich dealt with significant matters spanning various sectors, including technology and healthcare. His capabilities also encompass extensive trial and investigative expertise. Before becoming Acting Director of Litigation, he held leadership roles focused on Mergers, Digital Platforms, and Defense sectors. This comprehensive experience equips him with an understanding of the intricacies involved in modern antitrust challenges.

Chip Nierlich received his Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1997, and completed his undergraduate studies, also magna cum laude, at Claremont McKenna College in 1994. His impressive educational background complements his wealth of practical experience, making him a valuable asset to Debevoise & Plimpton and its clientele.

The addition of Nierlich to the firm comes at a time when businesses face heightened scrutiny regarding antitrust laws and compliance. As companies pursue mergers and competitive practices, Nierlich’s market insight and vast expertise will play a pivotal role in guiding clients through this complex regulatory environment, ensuring they are well-prepared to confront the challenges that lie ahead.

With Nierlich on board, Debevoise & Plimpton is well-equipped to advise its clients not only on legal implications but also on business strategies aligned with antitrust regulations. This strategic move highlights the firm’s dedication to staying at the forefront of legal excellence and client service in an ever-evolving market landscape.
