Celebrating 75 Years of Richmond Heights and Honoring Black History Month
Celebrating 75 Years of Richmond Heights
On Saturday, February 1, 2025, the Richmond Heights community gathered to celebrate a remarkable milestone—the 75th anniversary of their vibrant neighborhood. This momentous occasion also marked the opening of Black History Month, blending the celebration of past achievements with a commitment to future endeavors.
Organized by The Historic Society in collaboration with the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, the 75th Anniversary Brunch Awards recognized both the rich legacy of Richmond Heights and the influential leaders who have shaped its history.
The event was themed "Suits, Sundresses, and Sneakers," fostering an atmosphere of elegance and community spirit. City officials, community leaders, and residents came together in a grand celebration filled with reflection, recognition, and the promise of ongoing efforts to preserve the unique history of Richmond Heights.
Throughout the afternoon, honorees were acknowledged as “Changemakers” for their exceptional contributions to the community. Notable figures in attendance included Randall Floyd (known as DJ Nasty), Dr. Clarence Jones, former Commissioner Dennis C. Moss, Vice Chairman Kionne McGhee, Avery Washington, and several others recognized posthumously. Guests enjoyed historical presentations, live entertainment, and heartfelt tributes to Richmond Heights’ pioneers, highlighting the significant impact these individuals have made in various sectors, including public service, education, and community development.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava emphasized the importance of Richmond Heights, stating, "Richmond Heights is more than a neighborhood—it is a symbol of opportunity, resilience, and Black excellence. From its founding as a sanctuary for Black World War II veterans to the incredible leaders it has produced, Richmond Heights has profoundly shaped Miami-Dade County. The legacy of this community will continue to inspire us for generations to come."
Jessica Garrett Modkins, President of Hip Rock Star Advertising and the Executive Director of The Historic Society, reflected on the critical role of preserving Richmond Heights' history. "Who knew, back in 2012 when we began The Historic Society, how pivotal it would be in 2025? In a time where history is being erased, we are committed to ensuring future generations know and celebrate that legacy."
Vice Chairman Kionne L. McGhee, an advocate for the community, spoke about Richmond Heights’ continuing significance as a pillar of generational wealth. He remarked, "Richmond Heights is the epicenter of generational wealth for South Dade. We must equip residents with the financial literacy and resources needed to sustain and grow that wealth. Our focus must be on protecting the legacy of Richmond Heights and creating opportunities for future generations."
Former Commissioner Dennis C. Moss, whose contributions have shaped South Dade, echoed the sentiment of community solidarity, stating, "Richmond Heights was built as a village where everyone looked after one another, and that spirit still thrives today. As we celebrate 75 years, we must remain steadfast in preserving the fabric of this community and advocating for its continued growth."
In summary, the 75th anniversary celebration of Richmond Heights not only honored the past but also ignited a renewed commitment among attendees to ensure the community's history is cherished and its future is bright. As the events of the day showcased, the heart of Richmond Heights beats strongly, driven by the passion and perseverance of its residents.
